“Tell Me About Juneteenth” by Kortney Nash is a vibrant and engaging story that follows a young girl as she learns about the history behind Juneteenth.

Readers follow an inquisitive young girl as she wanders around her neighborhood block party, asking everyone what the first Juneteenth was like.

She learns that Juneteenth celebrations have changed several times over the years. With each answer she receives, the young girl realizes that the most important aspect of Juneteenth is celebrating the freedom it represents.

The text is written in a first-person narrative, which allows readers to connect to the story. The information is also shared at an age-appropriate level, making it a perfect read-aloud for elementary-aged children.

The illustrations by DeAndra Hodge are filled with details and bright colors that bring the story to life.

The back of the book includes more about the history of Juneteenth as well as a delicious recipe for strawberry lemonade. Tell Me About Juneteenth is a perfect addition to any children’s library! #childrenspicturebooks #picturebooksofinstagram #picturebooksaremyjam #picturebookillustration #picturebooksareforeveryone #picturebooksarepowerful #tellmeaboutjuneteenth #juneteenth #celebratejuneteenth #kidlit #kidlitbooks #socialjusticepicturebooks #juneteenth✊🏾 #happyjuneteenth #

Building a mentorship program like #PBRisingStars doesn’t happen overnight, and it requires the love and commitment of not only the leadership team, but also the support of the incredible #kidlit community!

It quite literally takes a village to run this program, to reach new aspiring PB creators each year and to share about the amazing opportunities taking place beyond PB Rising Stars!

We couldn’t do it without the support of organizations like @scbwi, @kidlitincolor, @kidlit411, @blackcreatorsinkidlit, @lasmusasbooks, @mindyalyseweiss and the PB Party team, and Sub It Club!

So with just over a week to go until mentee announcements, we want to scream THANK YOU to these orgs, to our incredible PBRS alumni, and every single person who shared our posts, told their friends about us, and helped us spread the word to this year’s applicant class!

We’re so grateful to be in this amazing community with you all!

One of our guiding principles as an organization is to help shape the future of what publishing SHOULD like — making room for more authors, illustrators and author-illustrators from diverse backgrounds to tell their stories. Why? Because we know the road to publishing is filled with challenges on the best days, and for BIPOC and other marginalized creators, the obstacles can be *that* much harder to overcome.

This year, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on the three mentors — Mónica, Shamar, and Natasha Khan Kazi — who are EXCLUSIVELY looking to work with BIPOC and/or marginalized creators and we cannot sing their praises enough!

Mónica is a QUEEN when it comes to stories loaded with lyricism, emotional depth and heart. Natasha has a keen eye for developing strong characters and even stronger plots, and when it comes to making imaginative stories come to life and creating characters on the page that feel real, nobody does it better than Shamar!

So, picture book authors, illustrators, and author-illustrators — unagented OR agented— these mentors are looking for BIPOC and/or marginalized creators, which includes (but is not limited to) Black, Native, people of color, LGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, neurodivergent, and/or any other ethnic, cultural, or religious minorities.

Click on our #linkinbio to visit our website to see which of these mentors could be the one that makes the different in your career growth. And if what they’re looking for sounds like you, then you already know what to do — apply apply apply! PS: Apply WIDELY too, because so many of our mentors would love to hear from you!

SWIPE to see all of our mentors accepting cultural stories from AUTHORS, and those accepting them from AUTHOR-ILLUSTRATORS
✨✨✨✨✨✨
Got a cultural story that you know would be GREAT, but it’s missing a little something?

If you’re an author, there are TWELVE mentors who can help you figure out that missing piece, and if you’re an an author-illustrator, FOUR mentors are ready to check out your portfolios and help you paint a richer picture (pun absolutely intended).

When it comes to capturing the beauty, diversity and joy of different cultural experiences, no one does it better than these mentors. And they want to show you how it’s done!

✨Note: We KNOW we have other mentors who will love your lyrical stories, so don’t be scared to submit them to others too! But definitely include the ones in these slides!

Click on our #linkinbio to visit our website and explore these mentors’ pages. And remember— Apply by 11:59 PM ET on March 21!
