Six of my former SWCC students are now at UNT, and all six are singing in Jazz Singers this semester under the direction of Katelyn Robinson. 🥹

Seeing them today and realizing just how far they’ve come filled me with a kind of pride that’s hard to put into words. These are the moments that remind me exactly why I became a teacher.

Watching your students grow, take chances, and keep becoming more than they ever imagined they could be… there’s really nothing like it. ❤️

Episode 0020, “Beautiful Love”

Love a song too much? It becomes # Written in 1931 by three composers who span three different decades of American songwriting, turned into a jazz standard thirty years later by Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, and Paul Motian on Explorations.

And then there’s Helmet. Page Hamilton — Helmet’s frontman — has an actual master’s degree in jazz guitar. He loved the Bill Evans version so much he buried it in distortion and had to talk his own band into playing it. That’s this episode in one sentence: a 1931 ballroom waltz, wrecked on purpose, out of love.

This week: a solo guitar reading, Ranee Lee’s Brazilian-flavored samba take, a metal band’s jazz-school frontman going completely rogue, and a 2023 gypsy-jazz quartet led by German guitarist Joscho Stephan proving this ballroom waltz still has somewhere new to go.

New episode up now — link in bio.

We may charge her for bringing the slippers and the guitar, an oversized fee, like $3,000. But just that. All good. 👍
