La Nombraron Prieta, 2020 by KIKESA KIMBWALA DEROBLES This self portrait addresses the marginalization of Black LatinX people and their denial of place in the sacred space of their own culture. Identified by family members, as “prieta”; a derogatory Mexican term for Black people, this beveled canvas frames the tension between the cultural experiences one self identifies with and the racial identifiers projected onto them as a means of excluding Black persons from their own histories, traditions, and communities. Kikesa Kimbwala DeRobles is a Congolese-Mexican American artist. Originally from Pomona, she earned her B.F.A. from Howard University and has since developed her studio and curatorial practice on the East Coast. BLACK ARTISTS IN THEIR OWN REALM: IDEAS, MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES curated by Atim Annette Oton Inquire: info@calabargallery.com Opening July 29, the exhibition explores what ways Black Artists globally are working ideas from concept to processing, using materials and techniques to evolve artwork. It will showcase a group of African, Caribbean and African American Artists whose work dig deep into ideas, materials and technique innovatively and philosophically. Artists in the gallery: Naomi Momoh, Winfred Nana Amoah, P. Wamaitha Ng’ang’a, Burns Effiom, Tunde Odunlade, Devynity Wray, Inyang Essien, Mecca Alim, B. Musah Swallah, Hassan Kalenga (Art of Kalenga), Aklilu Temesgen, Doba Afolabi, Alexandre Kyungu, Carl E. in case ya missed it - my curatorial debut "Wrist Game" opened last week and whew chile lmao. nobody tells you curating (a show that youre actually in lmao) is also actually painting, graphic design, videography, social media, branding, and a tonnnn of emails and forms - but as hectic as this has been, i finally feel like im creating spaces i imagined all along! i had to decompress a bit, but sending big love to everyone that checked out the show and, shared in support, or donated to this self-funded project! all too often Black folks arent given the space nor the credit they deserve, while our culture seems to become more expendable by the day. i wanted to create this show to challenge that - to make a space we could look forward to occupying, safely and with our whole selves. there are no words to thank those involved for how much this project meant to me - thank yall for feeling like family, even through the screen (tagging errybody in the comments) 🖤 in the meantime tho, we have more to come! by popular demand, get geared up for another "The Material!" session with more mixed-media talent this wednesday (7pm est) and if you havent had the chance to see the show just yet, click the link in bio to view! desktop/tablet view goes even crazier thanks to the amazing @matthew.ia 👾finally, we have something special coming to ya 4/24 from @treble.is + @yagirldjmagic (and quite a few others) - so make sure you follow @wristgame.world and turn post notifs on. bc who knows...i might have a giveaway up my sleeve ;)

We are now including MERCURY WEDNESDAYS to show love to past artists in our showcases Kikesa Kimbwala DeRobles @kikesaaa is a Congolese-Mexican American artist and Howard University Alumna. As a product of her experience as the oldest child, cast from birth with the unconditional responsibility of caring for and protecting her younger siblings, as well as her relationship with her single mother, she regularly employs a protective maternal gaze to dissect the violent and tender experience of caring for people of the Black diaspora, often as she associates individuals with their childlike vulnerability. This investigation into the historical, social, cultural, and genealogical roots of the traumas one associates with their identity is in the objective of providing healing and protection for her subjects, for her viewers, and for herself.

Several times this week, our director was asked about revealing strategies of how she is working and what thinking she is doing to expand the gallery's mission, its philosophy and approach to workimg with artists, curation and how her practice is evolving during this time. From creating the gallery's art auctions, selecting art fairs to participate in and planning future exhibitions to its unique project on developing Black Women art collectors, Atim Annette Oton will talk more about this with several inquiring minds. Stay tuned...more details soon. She will be sitting down for several interviews soon. Remember: Calabar Gallery represents underserved artists locally and globally: African, Caribbean and African American artists with the mission of providing a place for community, exhibition, creative initiatives and projects.
