Drawing from the sleek, cinematic coffee bars of 1970s and ’80s Italy – where glossy lacquer, polished metal, mirror, radical forms and bold color met the electric energy of Milanese design culture – PAUSA / STARE translates the spirit of the caffè into a contemporary domestic interior. Highly functional yet deeply social, the kitchen celebrates the particularly Italian marriage of technological innovation, craftsmanship, hospitality and style.

Commanding the long, narrow room, the banco unfolds as a sculptural composition of two contrasting quartzites from @artistic_tile , meticulously fabricated by @vistastonesurfaces. A polished volume of explosive Patagonia gives way to a quieter expanse of honed Naica, their intersecting geometries choreographing the kitchen’s overlapping rituals of cooking, gathering, eating and unwinding. The bar invites different modes of socializing: congregating around the Patagonia island with drinks in hand while dinner sizzles over the @vikingrange induction cooktop, or dining casually at the mirror-backed seating area.

The mirror tells all! Overlapping volumes of stained oak cabinetry and gorgeous quartzite slabs reflected in a mirrored backsplash create depth in this narrow kitchen at the 2026 Kips Bay Decorator Show House.

But the mirror is more than a spatial device. Inspired by those lining the walls of Italian caffès that inspired the design, it introduces an element of social theater—the pleasure of seeing and being seen, of catching one’s own reflection or another’s glance across the room.

A kitchen designed as much for observation and encounter as for the rituals of everyday life.

Designer Kiki Goti sees her creations almost as figures, bringing artisanal making methods and a love of decoration into contemporary design. With Haworth DesignLab, she’s exploring what happens when craft and curiosity meet.

PAUSA / STARE reimagines the @kbshowhouse kitchen as the Italian caffè – the center of social life. Here, a "pausa" is more than a coffee break; it's a daily ritual, a nexus for gossip and chance encounters, a moment to observe and be observed, and a stage for all manner of attitudes and styles.

Commanding the narrow room, the "banco" unfolds as a sculptural composition of two contrasting @artistic_tile quartzites meticulously fabricated by @vistastonesurfaces. A polished volume of explosive Patagonia gives way to a quieter expanse of honed Naica, their intersecting geometries choreographing the kitchen’s overlapping rituals of cooking, gathering, eating and unwinding.

Arts in the kitchen are sourced by @shwntng: coffee is taken casually on 3-D printed stools by @dirkvanderkooij, cushioned in @casamance_official velvet by @prestigefd. @kawabi 's paper-and-walnut Legume Pendant casts a warm glow above @thelucieclaudia 's polished steel box holding glass flowers. @aeri__go 's organic “crevice vase” holds a dried arrangement by @berry.homebk. On the wall, sheathed in @calicowallpaper , @jakecoan 's brass with red paper leaf floor lamp glows beside @kikigoti 's Thallo Mirror in hand-worked Italian glass, its aqueous forms a tribute to feminine mystique. At the end of the sink counter, @serrastuff 's Mannequin Lamp – sand-cast aluminum, rough outside, polished within – channels Giorgio Morandi's ghostly mannequin busts.

Behind the work counter, a mirrored backsplash by @glassolutions_unlmtd dissolves the limits of the narrow room, multiplying the stone and @bilottakitchens blue-green stained oak and lacquer millwork into an overlapping composition of forms. Like those lining so many Italian bars, it introduces an element of social theater: the pleasure of seeing and being seen, of catching one’s own reflection or another’s glance across the room.

PAUSA / STARE imagines the kitchen as an anchor to the movement of daily life – a place for ritual and spontaneity, efficiency and indulgence, intimacy and spectacle. A place to pass through, but also to pause, to stay.

The Bells and Whistles collection by Kiki Goti explores the space between function and flourish.

Cast aluminium bells anchor each piece, referencing the ancient craft of bell-making while shaping the legs of tables, chairs, and cabinets, and transforming into sculptural light shades. What feels decorative becomes structural. Hidden drawers and miniature whistle-shaped knobs add a quiet sense of play.

WUNDERKAMMER REIMAGINED takes place at THE GET by GLENN SESTIG in Ghent and offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the historical cabinet of curiosities, created in collaboration with UPPERCUT.

The WUNDERKAMMER, which emerged in Renaissance Europe, served as a space where objects from various fields could coexist. People gathered natural specimens, artworks, scientific instruments, rare materials, and unusual artefacts out of curiosity, personal interest, and a desire to create connections between seemingly unrelated items.

At THE GET, this principle drives an exploration of contemporary design. Objects are grouped by their individual characteristics, material presence, and ability to create associations that extend beyond their immediate functions. The exhibition brings together different forms, disciplines, and histories within the architectural context crafted by GLENN SESTIG, curated by SCOTT LIPPENS.

WUNDERKAMMER REIMAGINED views collecting as an active process of observation. An object’s value lies in the relationships it forms with its surroundings. Consequently, the exhibition functions as a contemporary cabinet of curiosities, where design is experienced through accumulation, contrast, and the potential for discovery.

The legs are bells. The doors are pressed by knobs. The cabinet wears its ornament the way a well-dressed object should: as structure, not afterthought.

The Bells & Whistles Cabinet by Kiki Goti for Toro Manifesto continues the collection's central argument that decoration and function are not opposites. Cast aluminium bell-shaped legs carry lacquered wood and solid walnut doors whose pillow-like surfaces bow gently outward under the pressure of ornamental aluminium knobs. The material techniques draw directly from the craft of bell-making, where form and sound and finish are inseparable from the object itself.

Available in customisable lacquer colours with oak as an alternative to walnut.

Kiki Goti’s Thallo Mirror brings an organic, almost botanical sensibility to the kitchen designed by Bilotta Kitchen & Home, where its sinuous form and richly crafted surface add a distinctive artistic element to the space.

Produced in Venice, Italy by Vetralia, Kiki Goti’s mirrors are available exclusively through Todd Merrill Studio.

As part of An Olfactory Feast, we radically deconstruct the mechanics of human perception to separate what we taste from what we experience in the mind.

Eight diners gather around a circular table to partake in a multi-course sensory meal. Allan Wexler created custom set pieces for the event, building a round dining table anchored by a massive scientific glass bell jar with eight radiating hoses that attach directly to the guests’ noses via prosthetic devices. As the diners sit to consume a flavorless, beige meal prepared by Finnish chef Antto Melasniemi, their perception of the food is continuously altered from the center of the table. The service is conducted across several aromatic courses: while the physical nourishment on the plate remains taste-neutral and monochromatic, a succession of herbal, floral, and spiced centerpieces is swapped into the central jar, dynamically shifting the perceived flavors of the dish with every breath.

The project explores the biological principle of retronasal olfaction—reflecting on the fact that our taste buds register only five basic dimensions (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami), while the complex universe of flavor is constructed entirely through smell. The act of eating becomes a visceral study in human perception—moving away from visual bias and traditional plating to manipulate the brain’s sensory structure directly. What begins as a flavorless, monochromatic plate ends as a vivid culinary journey, where the boundaries between ingestion and inhalation dissolve to create a new form of dining experience.
