The plan was to run my race, not chase anyone or be chased by anyone and it worked exceptionally well until …
Arrived at UCT Aid Station 36 min ahead of schedule feeling great, however both my hamstrings started pulling and cramping and my hopes of getting a sub 5hr started fading, I honestly didn’t understand what was going on with my body.

My family and friends received me at the UCT Aid Station with an unmatchable and contagious vibe, love and energy, running through the tunnel I could hear every single person at the aid station cheering and ringing their cowbells. I expected to spend some time at the aid station to recover but as soon as I got there, my people already knew what needed to be done, my empty bottles were being taken out of my pack and 10 seconds later full bottles were being placed back into my pack, somebody was pouring water on my cramping hamstrings and massaging them, a bottle of fresh water being handed to me to drink, followed my a gel, banana and cramp salt and ice cold water being poured on me whilst they all scream my name, everything happened in less than 5 min.

They then accompanied me out of the aid station back onto the course screaming, jumping and shouting as if I had won the race, unfortunately my hamstrings didn’t allow me to run the last 10km as smooth as I had planned but I was happy with the results and still managed to get the sub 5hr finish.

Leaving the aid station, I felt so much joy and gratitude for my family and friends and just the trail running community as a whole, when I had no motivation to continue, my energy was restored by everyone’s unwavering support and love, for that I had to give back and do the best I could given the conditions and state I was in, It was no longer about running “my race” and a lot more about “running for us”

to my family and friends, I love you.

To @utct and all the athletes who helped me along the way , thank you.

WE came, WE ran, WE thrived, WE smiled, WE loved and WE WILL BE BACK.
