Not everyone gets to travel across the world and fight the three biggest guys in the room, but when you have the opportunity, take it.

Y’all know I’m a WKA National and World Champion already, so I decided this year to try out for the WAKO National team, WAKO being the biggest international kickboxing organization in the world.

I made the national team with a split decision win, not fully understanding the ruleset and scoring differences—they are very different than 10-point-must/damage fighting.

That qualified me to represent Team USA in South America, and I had zero idea what to expect. I went alone. My only expectations were get bigger, train hard, and win.

I heard rumors it might have been small competition, but this has by far been the grandest tournament I’ve been to. Santiago was lit, and I mean on day one you could feel the energy and pride coming off these teams from all over the Americas, From Canada to Paraguay, all the way down to Chile.

The Team USA coaches were brilliant, and immediately prioritized building team camaraderie and union, because we all know morale and cohesion are a weapon.

We were the big, loud Americans, screaming for each other for every competition, all while being infectiously friendly to the other teams, because ain’t a single person on the national team is a bad spirit.

For my first fight, I went against a heavyweight Chilean who won the last Panamerican tournament, so I knew my first round would set the pace. For the second fight, I faced a Guatemalan who had already KOed Brazil with leg kicks. The way he screamed and fired up before the fight and even in the middle of the rounds reminded me of the Dothraki from Game of Thrones. The man was nothing but warrior spirit.

The final match was harder spiritually. The man I fought and who took 2nd on the national team was also in our bracket, and we agreed to fight our way to the top and get the rematch. It didn’t happen. A 6’1 Chilean Golem who could throw an NFL linebacker took the spot and almost took me out.

We didn’t let that happen. The coaches gave good advice, and when you hear “USA! USA! USA!” behind you, you ain’t gonna feel tired. You’re gonna fight.
