Maybe I’ll try living one day. But not today.

I’m back! I’m going to ease back into making edits because I really missed it—I’ve had a lot of issues over the past few years, but now I’m getting back to it. I felt like I just had to make this edit featuring Dazai,he was the first person who came to mind. Anyway, I really hope you’re all doing well! ❤️

“Mine has been a life of much shame. I can’t even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a Human Being”
-No Longer Human
When the first lines start like these, You know you’re in for a visceral read.
Set in the aftermath of the World War and grappling with a fast changing Japan, Oba Yozo feels alienated and can barely understand normal human interactions.

Yozo masks this inability for social interaction by putting up a clownish face and acting like a Jester. As his sanity crumbles, he goes into a self destructive mode leading to substance abuse. Not being able to understand even basic human connections makes him wonder if he was ” No Longer Human “ ‎

A semi autobiographical novel , Dazai uses Yozo to tell that mental illness is not just sadness or hopelessness but a constant battle against oneself.

Writing in the I, Novel style, Dazai blurs the line between reality and fiction.

The Japanese literature of today which gives the cozy, warm and heartwarming tales was shaped by deep understanding of the human psyche by authors like Dazai

What hits hard is - what if the faces we see everyday are actually Masks and the people behind it may be entirely different.

"Anything I would never want to lose will be lost. It is a given that everything that is worth wanting will be lost the moment I obtain it. There's nothing worth pursuing at the cost of prolonging a life of suffering." *cries*
