Opening days always come with a certain nostalgic anxiety.

This year, maybe more than any other, I was torn on what to do. My usual opening day spot had been full of people and/or void of elk the last couple times I’d tried it. But…it felt weird not doing the “usual.”

I finally decided that I would try and do both. I’d wake up extremely early, walk to a high point and listen for bugles/look for sign.

There was more snow than I anticipated making a long walk take even longer. I was thankful I woke up so early.

As I expected, no one had beat me down the trail and the snow made it nice to know, for certain, that I was in the lead.

The snow had a day or two to thaw and refreeze and it was just so damn loud. It became evident that I was not going to be able to sprint around in the pre dawn darkness and check multiple places. Plan A was plan A and there was no B.

As I began to climb a high point, I heard crunching in the snow, all around me. It was still nearly an hour until legal shoot light and I was pinned down.

As the sounds of elk moved off, I continued to move up, still expecting to see headlights from a team of horses coming up the mountain below me, but so far, nothing. I was shocked.
