Here are a few details of my painting “Lookout” which was painted along South Beach in Port Washington, WI this past July and August. The 6 days it took to make this painting felt like the epitome of summer for me. I got to paint the crowds of beachgoers on those hot sunny days with my feet in the sand.

This is the largest painting I have included in the exhibition and was one of my favorites to make. Each day I was fortunate to stand barefoot in the sand along Lake Michigan under the sun and in the breeze in the peak of summer along neighbors who came to enjoy this beautiful lake of fresh water. The painting became an artifact of the crowds that came and went along the shoreline. It’s rare for me to include figures that populate the landscapes I paint outdoors but here it made sense to capture their presence. The couple in the chair were surprised to find themselves in the shade of my painting which led to the title.

I met many kind and encouraging people who enjoyed witnessing the process of this painting come to life. Most conversations were about the beach and memories people had here but one that stuck with me was about the data center going up just a few miles away. When painting it’s not unusual for locals to come up and start unsolicited or controversial conversations. Turns out this guy’s local company could capitalize on contracts during its construction.

On one of the last sessions I was joined by my buddy @antwan.ramar who was traveling through WI that week. I’ll definitely be back to paint here again with swim trunks next time. If you’re familiar with this beach then you know how challenging parking is. Most days I was parked by the entrance waiting to snag a spot so that I didn’t have to carry everything from Coal Dock. It was worth the time and effort it took to make this painting.

A few of the days were a bit dicey regarding wind but my homemade easel held up okay with bricks and bungee cords. I’ll share some video clips of the setup soon but for now I hope you enjoy these details and will come view this painting in person on Friday!

Some cool things kick off today. First, “Out There” opens at @kimstoragegallery in Milwaukee, WI. It’s a two person exhibition of plein air paintings with @andypaczospaintings that runs through November 7th. I’m honored to have my work exhibited with Andy’s urban landscapes and interiors. Join us at the gallery for the public reception next Friday, October 16th from 5-8pm during @gallerynightmke
I have over 30 plein air paintings and one large drawing each framed in custom handmade maple and walnut frames. The work ranges in size from 3” x 6” all the way up to 4’ x 5’ all done on location from observation in Wisconsin. Like most exhibitions I’ve had, my work spans a few threads of exploration: geometric and multi-view compositions, handmade props staged outdoors, found self portraits reflections, and more.

Pictured here is “Divisions” one of a few suburban compositions I encountered in our neighborhood. I’ve become intrigued by the space between homes that are both private and public. I find a lot of inspiration in these narrow views of ambiguous space especially if there’s dramatic lighting where shadows play an active role. Made with oils on a handmade oil primed linen panel 8” x 6”.

Second, my studio at @theartsmill in Grafton, WI will be open this weekend from 10-4. I’m almost finished hanging a new grouping of paintings that I invite you to come and peruse. I’m one of a few studios on the 3rd floor when you make a visit to the mill on your Covered Bridge studio tour this weekend. I’ll have paintings at different sizes and price points available along with stickers and plein air zines. If you’d like to schedule a different time to visit my studio please let me know.

Hope to see you in the near future. Enjoy a wonderful weekend with sunshine if you got it!

Gallery Night MKE Preview 🎨

Out There | A two-person exhibition of new work by Hector Acuna and Andy Paczos. The title borrows the advice a teacher gave Paczos at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago: look out the window, “there’s lots of good stuff out there.”

He took it, and has painted Chicago from direct observation for three decades since. Acuna works the same way, returning to his Wisconsin sites across multiple plein air sessions and staging handmade props to paint in natural light. Both find their subjects by standing in front of them.

We had so much fun this weekend! We celebrated “Color Play” and brought together a vibrant, joyful and glowing night! It was so fun to work with Kim @kimstoragegallery to show with my dear friends Megan @meganwoodardjohnsonart, Gretchen @toddyponddesigns and new pal and current art crush Kathleen @kwaterlooart ❤️. Midwest Nice is alive and well and I had so much fun meeting so many amazingly kind folks and finally meeting Margret @authenticobsessions in person! Between the Friday night reception and the Saturday afternoon artist talk, my cup is full of inspiration and admiration of my fellow show mates. Please go to their pages and follow along if you aren’t already cuz they are so talented and delightful! Link to the show in my bio to see all the colorlicious works! 🌈🌈🌈
