From the classroom to the boardroom, the right opportunities can change everything!

At the HBCUniverse Summit: NC Edition, our panel, “From Classroom to Career: Turning Your Degree into Opportunity,” brought together industry leaders to share real-world insights on navigating the workforce, building meaningful connections, and making the most of your degree beyond graduation.

A special thank you to our moderators, Dr. Jenard Moore, and Shakinah Simoena-Lee, alongside panelists - Betsy Burton-Strunk (Spark & Steady Partners), Aaron Griffin (GE Aerospace), and Jessica Lyons (Salesforce), for sharing their experiences and wisdom with our HBCU community!

Thank you to the Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics & William Harmon Consulting for aligning the opportunity for this partnership!

Not gonna lie…. It started off a little rough for @drjenardmoore and me. Our expectations for our students are through the roof because we know this world will chew them up and spit them out. An institution of higher learning has a unique role in molding and accelerating minds. At an HBCU it’s even more….

With the support from @hbcuniverse.summit @venture4them and @charmin_harmon we curated a professional conference experience and pitch competition for our students in the Willie A. Deese College of Business and Economics @ncatdeesecollege

This midterm assignment goes beyond the classroom and forces them to think intentionally about an issue and formulate a solution and pitch. They’ve been on campus less than 2 months and most of them have been hit by the pitching bug - I can’t wait to see what they continue to do next!

THIS is what happens when you give students the opportunity to SHOW what they know! 🔥

For their MIDTERM, my students had just 11 days to develop a business idea and prepare to pitch it during the @hbcuniverse.summit, sponsored by the @ncatdeesecollege.

And let me tell y’all, these ideas were OUTSTANDING! Some of them I truly believe have MULTI MILLION DOLLAR potential. 💰

I’ve been very intentional about designing the curriculum for this class around immediate practical application. I don’t want my students just sitting in a classroom talking about what they could do. I want them actually DOING it.

These are freshmen who have only been in college for six weeks, and they are already showing up, taking risks, challenging themselves, and proving they are ready to rise to the occasion.

That’s what makes me proud.

Before any other recap content rolls out, I want to share one moment from the @hbcuniverse.summit with @ncatdeesecollege of Business and Economics at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University that made all the work worth it.

Midway through the day, @drjenardmoore pulled me aside to join @kinahglory and him to sit with some of the pitch contest teams as they prepped for their final hours. I was juggling about seven things at once, but I could hear one student nearby rehearsing her pitch while a friend coached her: “You can slow down a little.”

I chimed in. I hadn’t caught the details of her pitch, just her pace. So I told her she was doing great, she just needed to breathe. I reminded her that being one of the top teams to compete just two months into her college career meant she was already ahead. Every rep now builds the pitcher she’ll be a few semesters from now.

For the next while, I kept hearing her run it back. Each time, she sounded more confident. Right before showtime, I gave her a thumbs up: “That pace right there? Solid.”

She’d hoped to present early to get it over with. Instead, she landed one of the last slots. When she finally took the stage, I heard her concept for the first time, and I turned to Dr. Moore and said, “There’s something special there.”

Then they announced first place: Amara Pierce (@a.maraa16 )

She competed solo, backed by a friend who ran her clicker and listened to her practice again and again. That’s what a support system looks like.

To every student who almost backed out but pitched anyway: when your back is against the wall, that’s where character shows up. That moment will come again, and next time you won’t be as scared, because you’ve already faced it and made it through.

And to the nearly 400 students who gave us their Saturday and stayed engaged for over seven hours, thank you. Moments like this are priceless, and I can’t wait to build more opportunities for young people to take the leap.

If you missed this one, there will be more. Keep showing up.

Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it!

Yesterday I watched future entrepreneurs, CEOs, and millionaires take the stage at our Pitch Competition, and I couldn’t be prouder of every student who stepped up to pitch.

What makes it even more remarkable is that most of these teams were freshmen, just two months into their college careers. Two months in, and they’re already building businesses, solving real problems, and pitching with confidence in front of a packed room. That’s why starting young matters. When students get early access to opportunities like this, they don’t just learn about entrepreneurship. They start to see themselves as entrepreneurs. That belief changes everything.

To the 300+ students who showed up to support their peers, your energy made today unforgettable!

A special thank you to @drjenardmoore @kinahglory at @ncatsuaggies x @ncatdeesecollege for helping make this happen.

Huge thanks to @hbcuniverse.summit @venture4them , @salesforce , and @pncbank for investing in our students, and to the HBCUs who showed up and showed out:

North Carolina A&T State University
Howard University
Benedict College
North Carolina Central University

The future is bright, and it’s already here!
