Our Chestnut project’s living room is proof that sophisticated doesn’t have to mean precious. We kept the palette quiet with soft neutrals, warm woods, a little brass, and layered lighting. The quartzite fireplace detail was brought in as a bold contrast to the color drenched millwork we preserved. Every piece here earns its keep both aesthetically and functionally: durable performance fabrics, mohair and sheepskin throws that hide everyday life, slipcovered sectional, and a custom entryway storage bench loved as much by the dog as it is by their owner. Beautiful and livable. Swipe through our favorites →

This is the part that never gets old. 🤍

Our client came to us wanting a home that felt peaceful, personal, and beautiful - a place where she could walk through the door at the end of the day and immediately exhale. We spent months thoughtfully bringing that vision to life during this renovation, but nothing compares to watching her walk in and experience it for the first time.

This reaction says it all. And yes, she’s officially the friend with the cool house.

Here’s the thing nobody talks about: the homes we design are built for real life... not the camera! The sofa is where it is because that’s where people actually sit, the rug is that size because that’s how the room actually feels, and the lamp is on that table because that’s where the light is actually needed. Aaaaand then the camera shows up.

Photography has its own logic. Wider angles, different sightlines, perspective changing the way we need to layer things to make them visible for the camera, furniture pulled two inches from their normal location. We shift things, we style things, we make the room perform for a lens in a way it doesn’t have to perform for the people who live in it.

The Chestnut project was four hours of that dance and the photos are beautiful. But so is the version of this home that exists when no one is photographing it - that’s the one we actually designed!

A custom and intentionally designed home has a profound impact on your lifestyle and wellbeing, whether you realize it or not. Our goal is not only to design spaces that are beautiful, but also to make your everyday life feel easier, lighter, and more organized.

This oak entry bench transformed an underutilized corner into a hardworking space for everyday living; with concealed storage, additional seating, and a cozy perch for the family dog.

The most successful designs aren’t just beautiful. They make the rituals of everyday life feel easier, compounding over time to result in a more laid back and stress-free lifestyle. 🤎

The studio in our backyard has lived a couple lives in its short time here. It was originally built when I was pregnant with our first daughter; a music space for C and all of his friends. Almost two years ago, we turned it into Christian’s carpentry shop and while it served him and the guys well, it quickly became too small for the growing business of @kindcarpentry (a blessing indeed!) Now it is becoming a full blown art studio for our family. It’s turning back to its musical roots but also a place for the kids (and grown ups) to create art and me to have a place to write again(ekkk!) Stay tuned for how we are going to make this place fun, funky, and welcoming. We are feeling really blessed to have this little place!

If you’re afraid to live in your home, something went wrong.

This viral sound bite hit the nail on the head!

Good design isn’t delicate. It isn’t precious. And it certainly isn’t performative. It’s layered, collected, and built to be lived in, fully. Spaces should wear in, not wear out. They should evolve as your life does, becoming richer, more personal, more you over time.

The goal was never perfection. It was always a home.

I have some really fun and heartfelt updates coming your way. Everything from a closer look at our collaboration with @hairdeuxbycb to what is next with @magnolia. In the spirit of letting you in more and more, I want you to see ALL the things.

The truth is, I work inside a family network of small businesses. Some days I am helping my brother with @kindcarpetry, other days I am deep in interior design or even bookkeeping with my mom @sherryblackdesigns. This weekend I may be building a neighborhood fence for my dad at @randyblackhomeimprovements. These past few weeks have been no different.

So Christian and I thought this little behind the scenes moment would be a fun way to kick off showing you what really goes on in our world, day to day.
