Delighted that my work has been selected for the Faith Art Prize, celebrating contemporary art exploring faith, devotion and spirituality, and will be exhibited at Westminster Cathedral Hall.

With special thanks to the judging panel, including Patrick van der Vorst, former Director at Sotheby’s; Mario Tavella, Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe; Jemila Isa, whose paintings explore spirituality, faith and womanhood; and Nic Fiddian-Green, known for his large-scale bronze sculptures.

This painting grew from research during my MA at the Royal College of Art, alongside personal enquiries into women’s strength, trauma, and the possibility of painting as a space for psychological holding and repair.

It is inspired by the Sisters of the Valley, a spiritual community of women in California whom I will join for a residency this December. Their lives centre on care, ritual, activism and healing. Their collective strength and quiet resistance to dominant systems prompted me to consider the forms of strength found in softness, interdependence and sustained care.

My research draws on psychological thinking around attachment, trauma and healing, particularly Winnicott’s idea of the ‘holding environment’: a space in which feeling safe allows growth to become possible. Alongside this sits an interest in how distress is held and remembered in the body.

For me, painting offers the possibility of healing: a space where slowness, tenderness and attentive looking might provide temporary shelter, for both painter and viewer.

Thanks to everyone who came down to @kindredstudiosartists on Thursday 👻

Chloe Aridjis gave fascinating insights into her Booker Prize-listed novel, The Shadow of the Object, while in dialogue with founder of @specialriderbooksandrecords George Wyndham.

Then the brilliant Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker took us back in time with an unforgettable magic lantern performance that truly had to be seen to be believed.

A huge thank you to Chloe, Jeremy, Carol and the brilliant team at Kindred Studios who helped make everything possible.

Here are a few video highlights ✨

A little taste of what’s to come… In December, I’m heading to California to live and work with the Sisters of the Valley on a residency, and I can’t wait.

Here they are, out and about. Their daily lives will soon become part of mine for a little while, time to talk, draw, harvest, paint and get to know one another one way or another.

There’s so much that connects us: sisterhood, healing, community and the ways we hold and care for one another. I’m curious to see how that time together finds its way into my paintings.

Current paintings of the sisters can be found on my website in the series called Quiet Resistance.

The life of an artist can fluctuate between quietness and chaos – long swathes of introspection, focus, personal and quiet commune in the studio – to the intense environment of an art fair where you are suddenly on show and encountering so many different people, their energies and their own responses to what you made in such quietness. It can be quite disorienting. But it is also energising and important and beautiful to see how the work can connect and speak to people. I am incredibly grateful to every single person who spent time with the work, and had such insightful and personal responses to it. ⁣
⁣
Huge thank you to @ryan.stanier and the entire @fairplayartfair team for creating such a brilliant platform for emerging artists and for positioning me where you did to allow the works to breathe. To @jennieuwland and @studiorjones for your excellent curatorial advice and @ginasodenartist and @jochate for being the most wonderful art fair neighbours.⁣
⁣
Available works are still accessible via the Fair Play website and the link to my direct page is via my bio.⁣
⁣
Thank you so much. This experience has invigorated and exhausted me in the best possible way. Now to go and sit very quietly amongst the trees…⁣
