🥈 2nd in the world: Ironman 70.3 World Championship PC Open Division

Beautiful and brutal in equal measure. Severe cramps hit early on the climb up the Col de Vence and I genuinely thought my race was over. They eased and I pushed on, but never fully went away. From about 30km on the bike to the finish line, it was a case of managing them.

There's a lot of time to think when you're managing something for several hours. Every athlete on that start line has a story, and every one of us is carrying something.

Some of those struggles are visible. Mine happens to be. Others are carried quietly on the inside, unseen by everyone around them, however they can be every bit as significant, if not more so.

Ironman has a way of stripping everything back, pushing you to your limits and leaving you with nowhere to hide. Whatever you're carrying, eventually you're forced to face it head on.

But you don't do it entirely alone. The camaraderie out there was incredible. Some of the best age-group triathletes in the world were racing their own World Championship, yet so many still took the time to offer a few words of encouragement as they passed. Those moments meant more than they probably realised. Three years after watching this race here in Nice and promising myself I'd one day come back to race it, I've now completed two World Championships in the place where this whole crazy journey began.
