Before he learned to animate, Rahul Riji Nair had never made a single frame of animation in his life.

Four years later, he has 10,000 hand-drawn frames, a 14-minute film, and an India Gold Award to show for it.

Kingara Kavyam is set in 17th-century Kochi. It follows Kappiri, a man brought from Africa to Kerala as a slave, and Kunjala, a local woman, two lives history barely wrote down. Rahul wanted to bring them back, so he built a 15-member team, learned a craft he'd never worked in before, and spent nearly four years doing it.

The team almost went with 3D. They chose 2D instead and shaped every frame around Kerala's mural art so the film would carry the region's own visual memory, not borrow someone else's.

That choice just won India Gold at the 28th DigiCon6 Asia Awards. Kingara Kavyam now heads to the international finals in Japan, representing India.

This isn't Rahul's first recognition either. His debut feature, Ottamuri Velicham, won four Kerala State Film Awards. Kalla Nottam won the National Film Award for Best Malayalam Feature Film. He keeps choosing stories most people would call too small, too regional, or too hard to sell. They keep winning anyway.

If you had four years and no experience in a craft you loved, would you still start?

Save this for the next time someone tells you a story is "too niche" to matter. Send it to someone from Kerala who'd want to know their history; they just went to Japan.

National Award-winning filmmaker Rahul Riji Nair has achieved a monumental milestone on the global animation stage! His critically acclaimed 2D animated short film, ‘Kingara Kavyam’ (Poem of the Enslaved), has won the coveted India Gold at the 28th DigiCon6 Asia Awards, earning the honor of officially representing India at the grand finals in Japan. 🇮🇳✨
A Visual Marvel Rooted in Kerala Mural Art:
Spanning roughly 14 minutes, Kingara Kavyam is a labour of love composed of over 10,000 painstakingly hand-drawn frames, drawing rich visual inspiration from traditional Kerala mural aesthetics.

Set against the backdrop of 17th-century colonial Cochin under Dutch rule, the film unearths a forgotten chapter of history—the African slave trade in Kerala and the enduring folklore of Kaapiri Muthappan. Through the lens of magical realism, it weaves a poignant, tender bond between Kappiri, an enslaved African man, and Kunjala, an underprivileged local woman, exploring how love, caste resilience, and the human spirit transcend brutal oppression.
Produced jointly by First Print Studios, Carmond Infinity, and Fairy Frames Productions, Kingara Kavyam was also officially selected for the South Asia Competition at AniMela 2026.
Having previously bagged the National Film Award for Kalla Nottam and the Kerala State Award for Ottamuri Velicham, director Rahul Riji Nair once again proves his versatile storytelling mastery and, this time, pushes Indian independent animation into the international spotlight.

Absolutely thrilled to share that our animation short film, @kingarakavyam (Poem of the Enslaved), has won the India Gold at the DigiCon6 ASIA Awards and will represent India at the prestigious pan-Asian final. Organised by Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS), Japan, DigiCon6 ASIA is one of Asia’s largest and most respected short-film contests, bringing together winning films from 14 participating countries from Asia. This is an extraordinary opportunity for our film to represent India on an international stage. Deeply grateful to my team who believed in this journey. ❤️

I first met @anandtu and @wish_shack, the Founders of @carmond_infinity in Dec 2023 (Second Pic!) and the first thoughts of @kingarakavyam began to take shape. Besides their passion for animation, I was blown away by their ambition and commitment as entrepreneurs. Today they are not just my co-creators but also my brothers who have been a pillar of strength on this very difficult journey. I have learned and grown immensely as an Animation Filmmaker from their experience and today we dare to dream even bigger! And as always I had @iamlijojoseph in my corner to keep me going through thick and thin. As the lights turned on after our Premiere at Animela, it was a very gratifying journey for all four of us. I take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful folks at Carmond and my dream team @firstprintstudios, who made this film possible. The journey for Kingara Kavyam has well and truly begun and we are humbled by the warm reception and love the film received in Animela. Looking forward to many more!

He quit McKinsey & Co — not out of frustration, but out of clarity.

T.U. Ananthakrishnan used Covid-era remote work to quietly build freelance animation income, a team, and market validation. After working on projects including a game linked to Minnal Murali, his side income matched his salary.

Only then did he quit — and build Carmond Infinity.

Lesson:
Don’t jump into entrepreneurship.
Switch when market + money + team are ready.
