🤓 🎥: Head over to our latest substack (link in bio) for an update on the 2024 Special Mention films (including festival premiere/year & distributor) and where you can watch (almost all) of them now! These are films that were recommended to the inaugural list but had wider distribution in place or chose not to be included. We’re also asking ourselves if our definition of “distribution” will be the same in 2026, as we get ready to welcome a new cohort of films. Happy viewing! 🍿

Did you miss Elaine's Q&A? No worries! Watch it on the CSSC’s YouTube Channel now – link in bio!

Elaine McMillion Sheldon is one of the Center’s visiting documentarians this fall. She screened her film, King Coal. A lyrical tapestry of a place and people, King Coal meditates on the complex history and future of the coal industry, the communities it has shaped, and the myths it has created. While situated in the communities under the reign of King Coal, the film transcends time and place, emphasizing how all are connected through an immersive mosaic of belonging, ritual, and imagination. Emerging from the long shadows of the coal mines, King Coal untangles the pain from the beauty and illuminates the innately human capacity for change.

Elaine McMillion Sheldon is an Academy Award-nominated and Emmy and Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker based in West Virginia. Known for her intimate, nuanced portrayals of rural communities, she brings an honest, humanizing lens to stories often overlooked by mainstream media. With King Coal, Sheldon continues her exploration of Appalachian culture, drawing audiences into the heart of coal country to see a world beyond stereotypes and headlines.

This Visiting Documentarian Series is made possible in part by the Berkley Hudson Visiting Documentarian Fund.

A lyrical tapestry of a place and people, KING COAL meditates on the complex history and future of the coal industry, the communities it has shaped, and the myths it has created. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon reshapes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking in a spectacularly beautiful and deeply moving immersion into Central Appalachia where coal is not just a resource, but a way of life.

While deeply situated in the communities under the reign of King Coal, where McMillion Sheldon has lived and worked her entire life, the film transcends time and place, emphasizing the ways in which all are connected through an immersive mosaic of belonging, ritual, and imagination. Emerging from the long shadows of the coal mines, KING COAL untangles the pain from the beauty, and illuminates the innately human capacity for change.

We’re a little behind on posting because… honestly, we were having too much fun!

Foxfire Friday was packed from start to finish:
🌟 We kicked off with the powerful documentary Union
🌟 Welcomed a re-screening of our breathtaking opener King Coal
🌟 Shared the inspiring documentary @speak.documentary with some very special guests in the audience. A huge thank-you to the speech & debate students from Wheeling Park High School and Wheeling Country Day School who joined us. Your energy and curiosity were inspiring!
🌟 Rounded out the evening with five unforgettable short films.

We closed the night with a chill after-party at Waterfront Hall with filmmakers, film lovers, and friends coming together for good vibes, easy conversation, and a perfect Foxfire ending. ✨

If Friday was this good, just wait until you see what else we had cooking this weekend.
