“They definitely don’t take independent content. Everything is self-produced by their own team.”

Mark Samuels, VURT co-founder, on the Urban Film Festival stage. His plan was simple: make a vertical series, get it on one of the big vertical apps. What he found is they make their shows in-house, so there was no place for an independent filmmaker to put one, even if he made it.

So VURT takes independent work. Filmmakers: have you ever pitched a vertical series? What happened?

“Help me push my movie? Help me do nothing.” Every filmmaker with a distribution deal knows this one.

Mark Samuels, VURT co-founder, on the Urban Film Festival stage: other platforms sent him a check, some figures and a report. VURT is built the other way. It is free and runs on ads, so if nobody watches the project, VURT doesn’t win, and neither does the filmmaker.

Filmmakers: what did your last platform do for your film after you signed?

Register at myvurt.com/register, then submit.

Hook them in 3 seconds. End every episode on a cliffhanger. That is the whole vertical playbook.

Mark Samuels, VURT co-founder, on the Urban Film Festival stage on why the pacing of your script and your edit changes when the screen is a phone.

Did this one hook you in 3? Tag the writer who opens every script with a slow morning.

One landscape shot. Two vertical shots. Same take.

Mark Samuels, VURT co-founder, on the Urban Film Festival stage showing what a 16:9 scene turns into when you cut it for 9:16. You’re on him for one line, on Andrew for the next, and nobody shot a second angle.

Send this to the editor who still thinks vertical means crop and pray.

We believe in the collective and what defines legacy is building up those around you, which is what the city of @miamidadearts and @urbanfilmfestivals and their leaders @yonelaris @marcomall provided this past weekend. Bringing industry leaders across acting, distribution, verticals, producing, writing, cinematography, and the entertainment game to share their expertise and process - building up future filmmakers with tools across the entertainment industry. The result and their efforts are best described as #impact that paves the way for #greatness #legacy #creative #growth worth the visit to Miami in September - “Always”. Special thanks to @deshawnplair @ebanks.p @maldonadoiseverywhere @stop_playing for sharing extra time and knowledge with us and our partners the @bluetarpproductions @cfeg_inc team.
