Here we have my favorite cave that we visited in Tonga. That’s me swimming in it! If you’ll notice at the top of the frames, there is a sort of overhang or cliff side that actually reaches all the way down into the water. From outside the cave, you cannot see the entrance.

That is because the entrance is fully submerged under water. To enter, you have to dive deep and then swim into the cave and come up inside. Best way to make sure you clear the width of the wall is to swim upside down so you can see when you pass it and then come up.

Inside this cave, every wave in and out creates this wildly strange pressure situation. As the water surges in and out, your ears pop like when you are in an airplane or driving in the mountains. But the weirdest effect is when the water goes one way, the entire cave fogs up, and then the water goes the other way, the mist and fog clear. I thought my goggles were fogging over at first. And when I took them off, for a split second I thought something was actually wrong with my eyes lol. But no, just another fascinating feature of nature.

If you look closely, you can see fish swimming the reef ridge-line in front of the cave entrance! Again, incredible freaking experience, I crave another visit.

More Tonga content for youuuuu!!!

The many different types of animals and wildlife in Tonga kept me incredible happy the whole time. On our trips back into the island from spending the day with whales, some of us liked to pop up on the front of the boat and just soak in the experience and the views. One of these days, we spotted jellyfish just as we entered into our last stretch. And I don’t mean a couple jellyfish… we spotted a whole swarm of them. One such jelly is pictured here! We had our boat stop, and immediately hopped into the water to take photos of them and check out the underwater view.

Y’all, it was crazy! I’d never seen so many jellies out in their natural habitat like that! Everywhere you looked, there they were. Big, small, anything in between. That night we looked into what kind they might be. And we discovered that they were moon jellyfish! While they still sting, their sting is much more mild and tolerable.

So the next day, when we were coming back in, we asked if we could stop once more and swim with them. Sure enough, the swarm was still there, and we went swimming and shooting. It was a wildly cool experience and I would so do it again. I might have given one or two a little boop on the head… but we’ll never really know if I did 😂

It’s a whale! Oh wait… no… that’s me! 😂

During our time in Tonga, when we would take our lunch breaks from following whales all day, we would pull the boat off somewhere that had caves or reefs or gorgeous waters and after we ate we would pop into the water to play around and explore. This particular reef was one of the most colorful ones we got to see and it was teeming with so many cool types of fish and sea stars and sea slugs and more. If you look closely, you can find one such fish in these shots.

This was actually one of the only spots I fully removed my wetsuit because I wanted to swim as low as possible to take in as much as I could. It was incredibly beautiful and I was grinning like an idiot the entire time 😂😂 But it was stunning and exhilarating and I adored it.

📸: Thank you @ilmatto_dp for capturing me playing mermaid amongst all that beauty!! I’m obsessed with your shots!

So far, this is probably one of my top favorite shots from this trip. The baby floating up for air, the light rays and the way they highlight the calf so well, the mom below just trusting me to be there with them, it all just came together so beautifully.

In case you haven’t been listening, this was the greatest experience of my life. I’ve never felt more at peace or at home than I did when swimming with these gentle giants.

Time for a little baby whale tail!

This time last year I was having the time of my life in Tonga. Swimming and playing with baby humpbacks, chasing heat runs, soaking in the pure magic of all of it. Guaranteed I will go back again.

There really is no feeling quite like it. That feeling is something I want to chase forever. 🩵

Most of you probably know I went to Tonga about a year ago to swim with and photograph humpback whales and their babies. But that’s not all Tonga had to offer!

Introducing, the flying foxes! These not so little guys were absolutely everywhere! Looking like the biggest bats you’ve ever seen, and sounding like screams you never want to hear in the dark, they hung out in the trees surrounding our lodging. They especially loved the banana trees!

Here you get to see a baby flying fox that hung out most days on this banana tree outside our front door. He was a cute little dude.
