Black culture in Boston is not just one neighborhood, one era, or one history lesson. It is a story that stretches from Beacon Hill’s Black Heritage Trail to Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, Hyde Park, Nubian Square, Blue Hill Ave, Grove Hall, Codman Square, Dudley, Uphams Corner, Franklin Field, and communities all across Greater Boston.

It is the African Meeting House, the 54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial, the Harriet Tubman statue, the Malcolm X House, the murals, the restaurants, the churches, the barbershops, the schools, the community centers, the Caribbean markets, the African food spots, the block parties, the parades, and the people who kept the culture alive through every generation.

Boston is known around the world for colleges, hospitals, sports, politics, and American history, but Black Boston has always had its own impact on the city.

Its own food.

Its own music.

Its own art.

Its own neighborhoods.

Its own leaders.

Its own athletes.

Its own public servants.

Its own legends.

From activists like Crispus Attucks, Phillis Wheatley, Melnea Cass, Mel King, Ruth Batson, Elma Lewis, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Boston connection, to athletes like Bill Russell, Reggie Lewis, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, Terrence Clarke, and AJ Dybantsa, the influence is much bigger than people realize.

This post does not cover every person, every business, every neighborhood, or every part of the story, but it is a powerful reminder that Black culture is a major part of Boston’s identity.

Not just during Black History Month.

Not just in the past.

Right now.

Every day.

Which slide stood out to you the most?
