This is why I donโ€™t do procedures on the same day I see the patient. CMS/insurance billing rules require complex coding with modifiers to distinguish the separate services. Even when properly coded, insurers frequently reduce or deny payment for one of the services, arguing itโ€™s bundled into the procedure, despite the extra time and expertise involved in the consultation. This leads to physicians not being adequately compensated for the full scope of their work, making it financially and logistically more practical to separate the visits. Giving out free medical care is unsustainable.
