A Race Matters residency by King Baba
This past July, King took over Race Matters to sit with Black Afro-diasporic creatives across so-called Australia - exploring the languages we learn through culture, creativity, music, movement, memory and community.

HUDA THE GODDESS

𝓞𝓷 𝓶𝓮𝓶𝓸𝓻𝔂, 𝓶𝓲𝓰𝓻𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓸𝓷, 𝓹𝓸𝓮𝓽𝓻𝔂 & 𝓬𝓱𝓸𝓼𝓮𝓷 𝓯𝓪𝓶𝓲𝓵𝔂.

King sat down with Huda the Goddess to trace the languages, stories and memories that shaped her - from her childhood between Sudan and Egypt, to the poetry that became a way of making sense of the world.

They spoke about ancestry, oral storytelling and knowledge carried through memory, turning towards the communities that taught her how to belong.

Through ballroom, Black Inc and chosen family, Huda shares a vision of care rooted in softness, truth and collective responsibility.

A conversation about what we inherit, what transforms us, and the kind of legacy that makes space for others to flourish.

Listen to Huda’s episode of A Language We Learned on fbi.radio & wherever you get your podcasts.

BASJIA

𝓞𝓷 𝓫𝓸𝓭𝓲𝓮𝓼, 𝓭𝓮𝓼𝓲𝓻𝓮, 𝓫𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓲𝓷𝓰 & 𝓬𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝔂𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓸𝔀𝓷 𝓱𝓪𝓿𝓮𝓷.

King, in conversation with visionary performer, choreographer, curator and founder of Pyramid, Basjia, explore movement, desire, performance and the experience of becoming the author of your own body.

They spoke about the Black, queer and sex worker communities that have shaped her, the spaces Black people are denied, and the spaces they choose to create anyway.

From taking up space to building Pyramid - a haven for BIPOC dancers and workers - Basjia asks what it means to create places where black people can exist fully, loudly and without apology.

TRACK-ID TAKES YOU TO THE REDLINE.

Now, more than ever, marginalised peoples worldwide are living through escalating crises. We are sold false promises while our voices are shunned, told to wait, settle, compromise, and put out a flame that we have carried for generations.

They failed to realise that every attempt to extinguish it has only kindled the fire we foster.

REDLINE is TRACK-ID’s most unrelenting night yet. In the face of government corruption, hypocrisy and oppression worldwide, we asked ourselves: How do we bring the fight wherever we go? How do we breathe resistance into everything we do?

REDLINE is our answer. Tangling fiery prose with bold club bass, we ground dancing, embrace, joy, love and anger in an atmosphere that breathes resistance. We bring all of this to the revitalised church @unholy.playhouse in Town Hall, coming together beneath the shadows of the night and holding each other close.

Opening with spoken word performances before descending into a night of techno, ballroom, gqom and bass-heavy experimentation, REDLINE explores desire, resistance and release through sound. New and returning performers come together to grace the night with poetic and sonic languages, all united by a commitment to imagining a more liberated world.
