POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We’re looking forward to NACHBARN by Mano Khalil.

In Syria in the 1980s, six-year-old Sero grows up in a Kurdish village near the Turkish border. With a child’s curiosity, he experiences everyday life under the regime of Hafez al-Assad, which suppresses Kurdish identities. When a Jewish family moves into the neighbouring house, a friendship develops that transcends religious and cultural boundaries. Drawing in part on his own life, Mano Khalil uses subtle humour and carefully crafted imagery to tell a story of solidarity, tolerance and the painful experience of a childhood shaped by ideology and racism.

Wir freuen uns auf ONE OF THOSE DAYS WHEN HEMME DIES.

We‘re excited for ONE OF THOSE DAYS WHEN HEMME DIES.

Murat Fıratoğlu once remarked in an interview that his film was about a man having a very bad day at work. After returning penniless from İzmir to his hometown of Siverek, Eyüp clashes with the foreman Hemme over unpaid wages while working in the scorching heat of a tomato field. His anger at his circumstances grows until he decides to kill Hemme. But between him and the act stand the people of the town, unexpected encounters and the comic circumstances of a day that becomes less and less miserable. Director and lead actor Fıratoğlu breaks with the familiar narrative conventions of a linear revenge story. With an understated approach, he makes both the structural exploitation of the working class and the seemingly unremarkable practices of everyday life tangible, revealing the profound in the small.

Em bi kelecan li benda YEK JI WAN ROJÊN KU HEMME DIMIRE ne.

Ji ber mûçeyên ku nehatine dayîn, di navbera wî û serkarê bi navê Hemme de pevçûn derdikeve. Hêrsa Eyüp ji ber rewşa tê de ye, her diçe zêde dibe, heta ku

“First Days” is a form of cinema that explores both the beyond and the here and now of the word—a cinema of experience, a cinema that is more valuable today than ever before.

Queer Film History Switzerland? – Shorts on love, crushes, and lesbian subcultures

Filmscreening in collaboration with Cinematheque Suisse and Kino Xenix Zürich

Is there such a thing as a queer film history of Switzerland? What defines a queer film culture, queer filmmaking, or even a queer film aesthetic? Jenny Billeter (Kino Xenix), Seraina Winzeler and Emanuel Signer (Cinémathèque suisse) explored these questions in the jointly curated film series Queer Film History Switzerland? This also marked what was likely the first attempt to trace a queer and ongoing Swiss film history in cinema. It became clear that cinematic representations of queer realities of life, as well as discussions of their socio-political positioning, were rare right up until the beginning of the 21st century.

The short film programme presented at the Palazzo Trevisan builds on this and showcases a selection of the films screened, with a focus on love, loving glances, crushes, hook-ups and lesbian subcultures. This event takes place alongside the exhibition "The Unfinished Business of Living Together" at the Swiss Pavilion. The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia is responsible for the contributions in the Swiss Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

The programme will be screened in the presence of and in conversation with Ennio Rocca (Crushed 2022)

🎬🏳️‍🌈 Is there such a thing as a queer film history of Switzerland? And what defines queer film culture, queer filmmaking, or even a queer film aesthetic?
