Malinke from Guinea - Perhaps also with Mossi influences

Old Heddle Pulley depicting a whole female figure

Mood - 16,5 cm

Ex Collection Edgard Maguet

Edgard Maguet was «Chief Colonial Administrator» between 1908 and 1913 - After that he was Colonial Administrator in French Sudan (Mali and Burkina Faso) in the 1910s, and then in Guinea in the 1920s - He collected objects from Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Dahomey (Republic of Benin) until his return to France in 1937 - This specific piece was collected from him in the 1920s in Guinea & declared as Malinke in his files | records

Please note the powerful stance of this figure, very unusual for an African pulley

Please also note the high quality of the carving of this hard black wood and all its details, a masterwork certainly made by a great artist
- full of interesting scarifications
- with a back-side as beautiful and important as its main-frontal part

The indisputable importance and rarity of this object are due not only to the quality of its sculpture - They are above all due to the fact that it is the representation of a whole-complete figure, not just a half-bust or a head - And in fact I consider this object not a simple heddle-pulley but above all a truly magnificent sculpture !!!
