Mexican Women Artists (MWA) is a multidisciplinary art collective focused on celebrating and disseminating Mexican culture and traditions. MWA aims to share the artwork of Mexican artists in Canada, specifically in Calgary, pursuing values such as: comradeship, collaboration, reciprocity, mutual support and community growth.

MWA was formed by Mexican artists who immigrated to Canada from different parts of Mexico. Even though we are from the same country, our group is very diverse due to the different perspectives and traditions we each bring from the regions we come from.

In addition, there is a wide range of disciplines, techniques and materials that each artist uses, including painting, sculpture, embroidery, installation, and theatre, among others. We find unity in our experiences as immigrants and our shared passion for the arts.

Our collective explores diverse topics related to immigration experiences, women's rights, and celebrating our traditions. Along with the creation of artworks, MWA offers educational programming such as art classes for the dissemination of Mexican culture.

Xantolo (pronounced shantolow) is a Mexican tradition from the Huasteca region; the word is used to refer to the celebrations dedicated to the deceased and the traditional Day of the Dead festivities. Xantolo was introduced into the Nahuatl language from the Latin “festum ominium sacrum” which means a feast of all saints. For the Indigenous people in central Mexico, this festivity is more important than Christmas and it is observed in honor of the dead. This celebration is derived from the Miccailhuitl, the Great Feast of the Dead from pre-Columbian times.
