Just over a year ago, tragedy struck the community of Surprise when a deaf resident couldn’t escape her burning home due to not hearing her smoke alarm. A working smoke alarm wasn’t enough.

In response, ABF, the Surprise Fire Department, the @americanredcross and the @azcdhh teamed up to provide free, specialized smoke alarms for the deaf and hard of hearing communities. These alarms include a strobe light and a bed shaker. Our second annual community smoke alarm walk will take place in Surprise on Friday, April 11. To date, ABF has installed 327 Deaf & Hard of Hearing Alarms in homes in various Valley cities.

Recently, our CEO, Rex Albright, shared an update on this lifesaving initiative with @kjzzphoenix Kirsten Dorman: https://www.kjzz.org/kjzz-news/2025-03-10/after-deaf-surprise-woman-died-in-house-fire-nonprofits-offer-special-smoke-alarms.

At @famecaffe on Central Ave. near Camelback Rd. with their fantastic "Frenchie Toast" while @kiwid8 had the veggie scramble, paired with sweet honey-lavender lattes. A really great atmosphere for breakfast and brunch, and as you can see, the food is just as aesthetic. #frenchtoast #breakfast #restaurant #azfoodblogger #delish #brunch

This was easily the best birthday I’ve ever had. I’m so blessed to have so many people who love me and show up for me. I’m finally at a place in my life where I’m embracing my curves, appreciating the little things, focusing on what’s important to me, and cutting out what doesn’t serve me. Here’s to another trip around the sun 🥂🍣

Autriya Maneshni, Cronkite News.

I remember telling myself that when I joined Cronkite News, I wasn’t going to travel for stories because I didn’t have a car. Little did I know that I would be traveling to all of these amazing places in Arizona reporting on some incredible stories. Every story will somehow have an Arizona angle. A big shoutout to all of the reporters who stepped up to drive me or asked me to partner up with them and allowed me to tell the unique stories happening around our state. With one final week left of Cronkite News, I’ve learned that I truly love telling stories. I love to meet new people and learn about all of the amazing things they are doing. It’s been a wild ride trying to figure out if I’m capable of doing this job. I was incredibly nervous and full of self-doubt coming into Cronkite News. It’s hard to carry a tripod, a camera, and a GoPro all in one hand, but every time that I finish a story, I’m reminded of how powerful this profession is. I’m definitely still learning, but I’m finally feeling happy and excited about my career as a journalist. (:
