This is my best friend. She’s been a lot of things to me over the years but mostly she’s been a source of unconditional love. I can remember countless times she did something that put her own safety at risk to make sure someone else was safe. Sometimes it even drove me insane; when we’d drive by a person on the street and she’d pull over to make sure they were breathing. Maybe that’s her hero complex or PTSD response, but honestly it’s just who she is— she’s just a downright altruistic, beautiful soul. Something kinda rare to come by, a love that can withstand pain, struggle, loss, disagreement, damaged trust, growing pains, change, grief, time, and all the other things that life constitutes. My capacity to hate her at points was measured only by the depth at which I have grown to love her. She’s known me through some of the most pivotal moments of my life, and she’s stood by me through it all. The black out drinking, the lying, the waiting in parking lots for a ride home or the fighting back to drive myself drunk, the drug binges and the DUIs. She was there to help me get to meetings so I could get my court paper signed when I felt completely out of place, she was there to hold me accountable when I felt like getting better was some kind of brainwashed cult. She was there to encourage me and embody hope when I couldn’t see that possibility very clearly. Even when she’s been sharp, when she’s hurt my feelings, when she’s resurfaced old wounds for me— she was teaching me lessons I probably couldn’t have lived very long without. She was there when tragedy took some people I loved the most in this life, and she’s been there at every milestone in between, collecting chips for continuous clean time to new jobs, new life, new opportunity to standing before a courtroom finally free from supervision for the crimes I committed. She’s been there to hold me in the cemetery, at celebratory dinners, on road trips, adventures and all the moments in between... {cont. in comments}
