For today’s National Drowning Prevention Week Post, we wanted to talk about a fear that a lot of parents have when it comes to teaching their child to swim : Coughing.

The truth is—coughing is part of learning to swim.

Even advanced swimmers swallow water sometimes. It doesn’t mean your child did anything wrong. What matters most is how we respond.

Staying calm, sitting them upright, encouraging them to cough it out, and offering comfort helps build trust and confidence in the water.

With time, practice, and a few tricks (like wiggling their nose to help switch to mouth breathing), swimmers get better at bouncing back.

Coughs happen. It’s how we support them through it that helps them grow.

Last week was one for the books 💙

Our remote K&K team—who helped bring our K&K Mercier pool to life—finally got to see their work in person! We had a great week coming together from all across Canada to celebrate this accomplishment and attend the CSSA Conference in Niagara. 🙌

From exploring the streets of Montréal to witnessing the power of Niagara Falls, this trip was more than just a work visit—it was a celebration of connection, growth, and impact.

The CSSA Conference in Niagara also holds a special place in our story. Did you know that back in 2020, our co-founder Karim helped found the Canadian Swim School Alliance? It was born from a shared goal to create a safe, positive swim lesson experience for kids, families, and swim professionals across the country.

So much has changed since then—but our mission remains the same 💧

Our very first K&K dedicated pool is officially opening next week in Mercier, Quebec! 🏊‍♂️💙 This is a huge milestone for us, and we’ve been working non-stop behind the scenes to bring this dream to life. From designing the space to fine-tuning every detail, our goal is to create the ultimate learning environment for swimmers of all ages!

Starting this Monday, our first lessons at École de Natation K&K will begin, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome new families into the water! 🌊✨ If you love what we do here in Alberta & Saskatchewan, go show some support to @kknatation and follow along as we bring the K&K experience to Quebec!

We’ve been keeping a little secret and we’re so excited to finally share it with you! But to explain it, let’s take it back to the beginning… 🌊

I opened my swim school, @knkswimschool, 10 years ago in Saskatoon, when I moved out of my hometown in Quebec to Saskatchewan to raise my family. What began as a small idea quickly blossomed into something bigger than we could have ever imagined.

Then, in 2020, during the pandemic closures, watermellow was born. Our online lessons became a way for families to keep swimming safely from home, and what began as a pivot has now flourished into its own thriving swim community. Since then, both ventures have grown: watermellow continues to guide parents and babies online, while K&K Swim School offers in-person lessons in over 16 cities across Canada. ✨

And now, in our 10th year, it feels like the perfect time to return to where it all began—our home province of Quebec. We’re beyond thrilled to announce the opening of K&K Swim School’s first-ever swim school facility in Mercier, Quebec! 🤍

From our days competing on swim teams together to teaching our own kids how to swim, every moment has led us to this. This is for our swimmers, past, present, and future. For our team, who shows up with passion and care every day. And for everyone who believed in us and this dream—thank you.

Mercier, we can’t wait to welcome you to the water in Spring 2025. Stay tuned for all the exciting updates as we open this next chapter for K&K Swim School—follow along @kknatation
