The local vernacular is defined by two-storey houses and pitched roofs lining the narrow streets of the village Niedersprockhövel in Germany. The Town House takes these familiar proportions as a starting point and transforms them into a contemporary interpretation of the traditional urban home for a young family.

A tilted timber wall runs through all three levels of this Niedersprockhövel townhouse, splitting a triple-height living room from the sleeping, working and bathing spaces behind it.

Internal windows let the family switch the house between open and closed — see and hear across floors, or seal off into intimate, self-contained retreats. The street facade filters daylight through small openings; toward the garden, one large window opens the living room fully to the landscape.

A tilted wooden wall rises through all three levels of The Town House like an internal façade, separating quieter spaces for sleeping, working, and bathing. From these more private rooms, internal windows open toward the central living space. When they are open, the family can communicate across all floors.

We are excited to share our newest building. The Town House in western Germany. It takes its proportions from the local vernacular architecture of compact volumes with a pitched roof. The facade, we interpreted into a filter of narrow openings. Inside, the defining gesture of the house is a triple-height living room that runs from the ground floor to the very top of the building. This vertical space forms the social core—a kind of interior piazza—around which all rooms are organized.

We are having our first retreat! CLO Circle X @commongroundsretreats ❣️ 9-12 July in the French countryside! Food by the wonderful @kirthanaa 🌞 Very limited space! Link in bio to register interest and find out more.

Common Ground Retreats is by @alexmcfab and @thibaud_guyonnet 🍃 Together they curate retreat experiences rooted in movement, nourishment, education and lasting connection.

Set on a private family estate in the French countryside, among rolling hills with views of the Auvergne volcanoes- a secluded, quietly beautiful corner of France. Guests are housed across the 80-hectare estate: in the 17th-century village at the heart of the property, and at @la_grange_rouge, Thibaud’s family’s former motorbike garage, transformed into a modern glasshouse by Danish architect @sigurdlarsen_architecture
A special place to slow down, gather, and breathe.
