Final days at Kiang Malingue New York, Once More Encore: The First Year of Benny’s Video Remixed, an exhibition by Benny’s Video, a curatorial project of Craig Jun Li.

In the video program, the camera is an unfixed apparatus through which the entanglement of relationships, perspectives, and subjectivity are explored. Dave McKenzie, Wilfred and Me, 2012, is a filmed performance that negotiates the past and the future, amidst the infrastructural failure of the public health system, prompted by Magic Johnson’s AIDS diagnosis announcement. Glen Fogel, Why Don’t I ... Pretend To Be Your Dad, 2015, wrestles with a film in which a character named Glen greatly resembles the artist, reconciling it as a projection and a fiction. Cooper Campbell, Elephant, 2024, shows two police officers training at a jujutsu facility disarming each other of firearms. Vijay Masharani, Tree, 2026, shows a swaying tree on a windy night outside of the artist’s window. In William Wiebe, Double Feature, 2024, the camera is focus hunting through a moving tree.

Simon Shim-Sutcliffe, Quarters, 2025, is an atlas of the open pit mines, sewer systems, gardens, and volcanoes of the Pacific, shot through Cold War-era telephoto lenses, as an epilogue to the artist’s Chinese family who worked on the Panama Canal. Erin Johnson, Heavy Water, 2018, set in South Carolina’s Savannah River Site, a nuclear weapons program facility and home to a population of wild dogs, traces a timeline of survival amidst the precarious future of radioactive waste. Through optical printing, Mary Helena Clark, Orpheus (outtakes), 2012, stakes out an interstitial space of haunting through Jean Cocteau’s Orphée. P. Staff, On Venus, 2019, questions the construction of the “others,” through color inversion footage of industrial farming and animal commodities, against a poem on the volatile life on Venus, as a queer state of being. In Kevin Kelly, Interference, 2020, a worker interacts with enigmatic images on his iPhone to probe misinformation and image as empirical evidence.

Plan your visit through August 7, 2026, at 50 Eldridge Street, New York.

Some Acts Around Rocks and Stones (Part 1), 2017
16:02

"Some Acts Around Rocks and Stones (Part 1), is about the morphology of discourse around an artwork. It begins with found footage of Marcel Duchamp defending the conceptual legitimacy of an artwork. It is then followed by a sequence of word for word subtitles by an art dealer using his spiel of what a readymade is to sell an artwork. The latter part of the video focuses on an interview with an art historian. She wrote her master’s thesis on the public reaction to Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty and then has lived near and observed the jetty for 25 years. Cut amongst this dialogue is an artistic form of labor, in which I turn over the basalt rocks located in and around the Spiral Jetty. Does this change the work? What if you can’t tell because it’s a sculpture in the environment that is slowly changing? Through this unlimited inquiry with the historian and work itself, I bring back the experiential quality to an artwork that is mostly known through images." @kktootall

Last week to see Kevin Kelly, “Caute”, featuring an evocative new film employing speculative optics to journey the radical life and philosophy of Baruch Spinoza. Closes March 15.

Through meticulous research and experimental film techniques, Kelly captures the intimacies of Spinoza’s world, formed by his exile by the Amsterdam Sephardic Jewish community at the age of 23 and his life as a lens grinder for microscopes and telescopes — a chosen profession that informed his philosophical ideas.

Opening Tonight: Kevin Kelly, “Caute”, featuring an evocative new film employing speculative optics to journey the radical life and philosophy of Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677).

Kevin Kelly
CAUTE
January 31 – March 15, 2025

Opening reception:
January 31, 2025
6–8PM

Through meticulous research and experimental film techniques, Kelly captures the intimacies of Spinoza’s world, formed by his exile by the Amsterdam Sephardic Jewish community at the age of 23 and his life as a lens grinder for microscopes and telescopes — a chosen profession that informed his philosophical ideas.

In Caute, Kelly’s exploration focuses on micro-details from his biography along with the sensorial. Through an interview with the caretaker of his former places of residence and recreating 17th-century optical perspectives by filming scenes Spinoza is known to have looked upon through his singlet lens. He brings viewers into Spinoza’s intellectual landscape and physical surroundings as Spinoza wrestled with radical ideas that linked God and nature, explored the dynamics of emotion, and championed intellectual autonomy in the face of religious dogma and state ideology.

Through poetic visual fragments, the film reflects his pursuit of truth amid religious and social isolation and the tolerant community who supported him. The exhibition title, Caute—Spinoza’s motto meaning “be cautious”—is a tribute to his steadfast quest. Spinoza’s signet ring bore this message, marking letters he sent into the world.

Organized by Howie Chen
Produced by Jon Huron
