Want to be a model? Looking the part is only half the job. You need to understand the business too.

Here are 7 modeling industry terms you should know before booking your first paid job.

1. BOOKED – The client has officially confirmed you for the job. Time to work!
2. CHECK AVAIL – The client is checking your availability for a potential job. You’re being considered, but you’re NOT booked.
3. HOLD – A client wants you to keep certain dates available while they make a decision. Still not a booking.
4. CALLBACK – You made it past the initial audition, and the client wants to see more. You’re getting closer!
5. FIRST OPTION / SECOND OPTION – Multiple clients are interested in the same dates. First option has priority, while second option is next in line.
6. SLATE – A quick on-camera introduction where you state your name and any other information the casting requests.
7. SELF-TAPE – An audition you record yourself following the client’s specific instructions.

Remember, a callback isn’t a booking. A hold isn’t a booking. Until you’re officially confirmed, nothing is guaranteed.

Modeling is more than looking good in front of a camera. Learn the business, understand the process, and be prepared when opportunity comes.

4 THINGS PHOTOGRAPHERS WISH MODELS KNEW BEFORE A SHOOT

1-Come with ideas.
Reference photos aren’t cheating. Save poses, expressions and concepts that fit the shoot. Give yourself and the photographer somewhere to start.

2 — Movement photographs better than posing.
Don’t just hit a pose and freeze. Shift your weight. Move your hands. Turn your shoulders. Walk. Reset. Small movements create options.

3 — Your face is part of the pose.
You can nail the body position and lose the photo with the same expression every time. Your eyes, mouth and energy matter.

4 — Speak up.
If something feels awkward, your clothes aren’t sitting right or you don’t understand the direction—say something. Collaboration makes better photos.
