Berlin Summer University of the Arts 2027 🐝

In the summer, we’re drawn outdoors, where we gather and eat together. This gathering is the inspiration behind the poster. The typography was drawn on paper using honey, laid out on a wildflower meadow, and left to nature to shape. The design emerged through the natural gathering of insects.

A look back at our sixth and final talk.

Jeannette @altherrdesilepark opened with where she grew up and took us through a career shaped by curiosity, persistence and a reduced aesthetic that is anything but boring. Influenced by Japanese and Danish design, drawn to materiality, color and subtle detail.

She shared her journey honestly: from her first design
steps to navigating crisis after crisis, to her breakthrough and her experience as a woman in the design field.

What stayed with us were the bigger questions she raised.
Can design be restorative? Is there still an audience for
meaningful objects? And what makes an object meaningful in the first place? Her talk was both challenging and inspiring and showed a strong awareness of what young designers are thinking about right now.

A look back at our fifth talk.

@samwellerdesign walked us through his work from heated blankets and hospital incubators to heading lighting development at @haydesign .
What stood out was how much his surroundings, his workplace and the people around him shaped his path. He spoke honestly about learning through making, about the value of working closely with manufacturers, and about a career built on deepening technical knowledge over time.
The talk ended with an open Q&A on collaboration, career opportunities and how to pursue ideas whose feasibility is still unclear.
Engaging, grounded and full of perspectives worth taking with you.

A look back at our fourth talk.

@jonmarshalll and @neue_miller came together – very much in the spirit of @pentagramdesign : interdisciplinary, collaborative, and working as equals. A firm that has been reinventing itself since the 1970s, while a clear thread runs through all of its work.

Both spoke about their projects, their careers and the principles that guide their work. Jon on form and beauty as undervalued qualities in product design – and why beauty makes products last longer and more sustainable. Hugh on typography, identity and a career built through relationships and friendships.

What they have in common: neither could settle on just one path early on – and made exactly that their strength.

Ein Rückblick auf unseren dritten Talk!

Anhand seiner Projekte zeigte @martin.malte , wie Grafikdesign den öffentlichen Raum als Bühne nutzen kann und wie sich die Grenzen zwischen Grafikdesign, Produktdesign, bildender Kunst sowie Bild, Klang und Geste auflösen.

Dabei sprach er über Typografie als Inszenierung von Text, den öffentlichen Raum als Kommunikationsfläche und darüber, wie Gestaltung gesellschaftliche Prozesse sichtbar machen kann.

Besonders deutlich wurde, wie wichtig ihm interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit und die Vermittlung von Design an Menschen außerhalb der Designwelt sind.

Der anschließende Austausch über Social Design mit Studierenden und Lehrenden eröffnete spannende Perspektiven auf die gesellschaftliche Verantwortung von Gestaltung. Zum Abschluss teilte Malte Martin persönliche Einblicke in seinen Werdegang, sprach über kommende Ausstellungen und gab wertvolle Tipps für den Einstieg in die Designpraxis.
