Handbuilding: Celebrating beauty in imperfections

Handbuilding allows one to create forms with clay and your hands, without using a pottery wheel. Before ceramicists invented the wheel, handbuilding was the only way they could create functional and artistic ceramic forms.

As one explores few basic techniques like pinching, coiling and slab work, they can navigate their creative outlet into various artistic handbuilt pieces. The possibilities are endless. One could create objects ranging from abstract to functional and from miniature to giant forms.

Hand building celebrates beauty in imperfections, while preserving the evidence of touch. As symmetry may look perfect, imperfections in asymmetry make a piece more alive and undoubtedly one’s own.
