Disco was born in the sweat-soaked underground clubs of Black, Latino, POC and queer New York where DJs and dancers created a sound and sanctuary out of unapologetic sexuality, resistance, and tight-knit community. Long before it was packaged, whitewashed, and sold back to the mainstream, disco always belonged to QTBIPOC communities.

The ‘Hustle’ originated in the early 1970s in the South Bronx as a ‘frequeria’, or a dirty dance, popular among Puerto Rican and Latine teenagers, blending elements of mambo, salsa and swing dance that evolved throughout the decade. Its name changed frequently with the times: The Rope Hustle, then The Push and Pull Hustle. By the mid 70s, it evolved further into what was known popularly as the Latin or Spanish Hustle. Eventually, ‘the hustle’ became a catch-all term for disco dance styles, partnered or otherwise.

VIBES: HUSTLE is both a revival and a homecoming, putting the legacy originators back at the center, honoring the queer and trans people of color whose movement, bodies, voices, and vision built this genre and era from their own light, influencing dance music forever. ring my bell, baby 🔔
