Porter-Yoshida treats its bags as canvases and has never let a collaborator change them. The construction is always @porter_yoshida_co.official, only its surface goes to the partner, and that collaboration model has been going strong for ninety years. Supreme, Stone Island, JJJJound, KAWS and Comme des Garçons have all put their name on one, and it goes beyond fashion, as the brand has also built cases for Apple and Sony as well as guitar pouches for C.F. Martin with Eric Clapton. Kichizo Yoshida was 17 when the Great Kantō Earthquake hit Tokyo in 1923. Watching a city flee with their possessions gave him the philosophy he founded Yoshida & Co. twelve years later with: “a bag must first and foremost be a tool for carrying goods.” The bag is the function, crafted in Japan, and it doesn’t change regardless of who’s collaborating. The TANKER collection, debuted in 1983, is where the canvas is seen the most. Featuring a three-layer nylon, orange lining and hardware that develops patina with use, design codes are inspired by the MA-1 flight jacket. Hiroshi Fujiwara encountered it in 1995 and approached Yoshida to work on a DJ bag for GOODENOUGH, which he describes as fandom - “it’d be nice if a brand I liked would make it for me” - and the double name it produced set the template fashion has run on since. Partners are handed print, colour, material and hardware, but not the silhouette’s foundation or where the tag sits. And that isn’t a brand guideline, it’s the final instruction from Yoshida’s deathbed to his son: “don’t let Japan’s craftsmen die out”. That’s why Porter brings the same level of construction, from stitch quality and zipper development to a refined structural logic, learned alongside 80 Japanese workshops. The 90th anniversary book, out tomorrow, makes the argument of it as an object. The cover is cut from the TANKER’s new plant-derived nylon, and the brand’s craftspeople sew the PORTER tag into it before bookbinders wrap each copy by hand with the thread used in the bags. Most brands will collaborate to borrow meaning, yet Porter has spent nine decades making sure it never had to.
