I have brainstorm besties. Those I know that entertain my ideas no matter how crazy and build on them and that's where the creative magic happens. "Yes, and" is the entire premise of improv comedy and a skill that Kelly Leonard is teaching to build innovative cultures at some of the world's leading companies. What happens when you get a "yes, but"? Find out from this longtime creative executive at The Second City in Chicago and the co-author of the best-selling book “Yes, And.” 🎧 Kelly joins me on Commical: Improv means business. Got a great idea? Excellent. Let’s kill it in under five seconds with “no’s” better-dressed corporate cousin: “Yes, but…” Kelly Leonard from The Second City calls it “no with a top hat” and this ridiculously simple improv exercise shows exactly what happens to ideas depending on what we do with them next. If you lead a team, run meetings, brainstorm, collaborate - or have ever watched a perfectly decent idea get beaten to death before it left the room - watch this. 🎧 Kelly joins Marie El Daghl on Commical: Improv means business. The only thing I love more than comms is comedy. And funnily enough, they work together like charcoal chicken and toum (garlic dip). The Second City is one of the world’s leading improv comedy theatres and schools... and also happens to be an incredible corporate training organisation. Led by Kelly Leonard, they take the same skills behind brilliant alumni like Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey and bring them into workplaces around the world to build communication, collaboration, trust, innovation and creativity. Improv + behavioural science = better humans working with other humans. Who knew? Send this episode to that one boss who always told you there was no room for humour or comedy at work beyond the lunch room. I see you. 👀 🎧 Improv means business. Full episode via link in bio.

Have you found your ferret? Stay with me… An early story in Better Good is about how I found an opportunity to do good at a time I didn’t think I had any extra time, ability, or resources in my life or career to do good in the world, even though I wanted to. Then, I unexpectedly got a call about helping the local ferret shelter that opened my eyes to the possibility of being helpful in ways I never saw but turns out were hiding in plain sight all around me. I unpack the story further in the book and also a bit here in this clip from @klsecondcity’s podcast, Getting to Yes, And. I hope you’ll check out this clip, the entire episode, and the full ferret story in Better Good so that too can “find your ferret” - opportunities for doing good that are hiding in plain sight, right where you are, using what you already have.

I really do have the best job in the whole world. 🐾 I have the honor of meeting so many amazing families, each with their own story, their own challenges, and their own celebrations. We laugh, we cry, we celebrate the wins, we work through the hard days, and we share a whole lot of stories along the way. 🤍 To every family who trusts me with your journey… Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Happy National Dog Day! 🐾 #nationaldogday #dogsofinstagram #dogsofchicago #dogtrainerlife #dogseverywhere

BAD MAN RAMBLE // Daily_Dreamers ___________ I’m a former Playboy Senior Art Director. I’ve been on the Apple Mac since 1989, when a screen printer asked if I could put type on a curve with a new computer he’d just bought but had no idea how to use. I hold a BFA in art and design from Louisiana Tech. I also spent time at LSU, joined a fraternity, and was a cheerleader for one year—the same year I realized I’d never graduate if I kept up with all the parties. I’ve worked at quite a few Chicago agencies as a freelancer, I've created art for the LOOP radio station, I freelance for Lettuce Entertain you, Jim Beam Brands, and a number of other gigs like The Loop, and for a full year I starred in Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding at Piper’s Alley as Michael Just, Tina’s ex-boyfriend who escapes rehab to crash the wedding. Crazy. I’m also an improviser and actor. I’m a Second City graduate and studied at ImprovOlympic (now iO) with Del Close, Charna Halpern, Susan Messing, Rachael Mason, Liz Allen, Mick Napier, TJ Jagodowski, David Pasquesi, Hans Holsen, and others. Charna put me on my first team in Level 2—Jack McBrayer was on that team. I had a second run at iO after watching my wife’s graduation show (Jack was the guest coach). I interrupted a chat between him and Charna, Jack said, “Charna, do you remember Scott?” She did, asked if I was on a team, and put me on one the next day. What a time. I was also on the original team with Doug Deffenbaugh (my Second City team was “SPANK”). Doug’s idea became The Playground Improv Co-Op. I designed the original logo and used to sit in the corner of the stage playing guitar while the el rattled past every 15 minutes at the old Cue Club space on Sheridan. It’s all true. I’ve got the résumé somewhere… now where did I put that damn document? Follow along if you like Chicago stories, creative chaos, and the long game of making things. If you are fond of being in front of a lens, I'm fond of making you look your best." It's what weirdos do". ( Name that quote: who said it, and when). 🎬 @ANDERSON_Camera / @thedogandponyshowtv 👀

This conversation with @klsecondcity for his “Getting to Yes, And” podcast will forever live in my heart. We touched on grief, care, parenting, and the notion that we heal and thrive and understand best in community…one of the many ways life is like improv 💚 Thank you for drawing the parallels between my work and yours, Kelly. It really is all about human connection. 🎧 Listen to the full episode at secondcity.com, wgnradio.com or on YouTube

Improvisation is often misunderstood as spontaneity. It isn’t. In this DISRUPT:The Podcast conversation, my co-host Eloiza Domingo and I sat down with Kelly Leonard, Vice President at The Second City in Chicago, to explore what improv requires: presence, listening, and the ability to go with it when there’s no script. Kelly started there as a dishwasher. Years later, he was producing some of the most recognized voices in comedy, not because he was the funniest person in the room, but because he was reliable. He showed up. He paid attention. He made his partners better. How? You don’t learn lines, you learn about who your team members are. You don’t strive for perfection, you strive to winningly recover when things go off kilter. You don’t play the scene you wish you’re in, you play the scene you’re in. Imagine how these principles could revolutionize how we collectively perform at work.
