POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We are nearing the two-year anniversary of the Eaton and Palisades fires. Thousands remain displaced and thousands of homes tainted with toxic smoke are still in limbo, as homeowners battle insurers over a basic question: When has a home contaminated by the smoke, which carries particles of heavy metals like lead and beryllium, safe to reoccupy? That question has not been answered before at either a federal or a state level. Two new bills signed into law this week by California’s governor are about to change that. The state has two years to create a set of standards for the heavy metals on the CAM-17 panel and other dangerous substances like cyanide. It still shocks me to ponder that these poisons are, as yet, unregulated in residential homes. The regulations for toxins like beryllium were designed for workers in factories, wearing PPE and exposed for the length of an eight-hour. What happens when you find beryllium in your kitchen, as families we interviewed in Altadena discovered. Or cyanide in your child’s car seat, as was the case for Korinna Sehringer, a single mom we spoke to. Assemblymember John Harabedian, author of the new bill AB 1642, was kind enough to tell me that the new bill was in part catalyzed by our Times investigation, which shed light on the extent of the contamination and its impact on public health. Exciting news! We’ve launched The Local, a new initiative at The Times to connect readers to their communities through journalism. We’re starting in the Twin Cities this summer, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to lead the project and this amazing team.

Two decades ago, when Francisco Camey and his brother Gilberto arrived in the Hamptons from Guatemala, the average home price had just crossed $1 million. Today, homeowners spend as much $1 million each year just to care for their hedges. Francisco Camey spent over a decade as a landscaper, wrapping the hedges of multimillion-dollar estates in burlap. Earlier this year, he was found dead in the snow. His difficult life and cruel death is a window into what has become one of the most extreme divides in our economy: a summer resort for billionaires maintained by undocumented laborers, many of whom live under tarps in the woods. I hiked into the forest with photographer Victor J. Blue, whose photographs you see here, to find Francisco’s brother Gilberto and to accompany him and other homeless landscapers to Francisco’s funeral, paid for by Hamptons Community Outreach, one of the few organizations trying to help these men. Please read the full story, which is linked in my profile. A man is walking in the woods

Deeply honored to share alongside talented colleagues an award that recognizes reporting in the service of human rights — and carries forward the legacy of someone who risked his career, and ultimately his life, defending them.

Since the Los Angeles fires, @blackili and I have been tracking how insurance companies are driving families to move back to homes contaminated by smoke. Sylvia Van Ness, age 6, moved back with her parents to Altadena after Farmers Insurance cut off the family’s hotel payments. The insurer is the second largest in the state and like other carriers it is relying on what scientist interviewed by the Times is calling incomplete or outdated science to argue that homes contaminated with toxic chemicals from the smoke, including lead, beryllium, chromium and cadmium, all of them Group 1 carcinogens, can be repaired through professional cleaning. But over two dozen experts, including scientists, academics and industrial hygienists say that’s not true - these toxic particles are so small they penetrate the very fibers of a house and removing them means doing a gut renovation. We know that the Van Ness home was contaminated when they moved back, because we tested the house ourselves finding 27 times the federal threshold of lead in the kitchen where this little girl plays. We also know that the family was exposed - researchers at Mount Sinai took locks of her hair and found lead as well as 10 times the normal level of arsenic in her hair, with the spike coinciding with the days when she moved back in. This story, on New York’s flooding challenges and potential solutions, has been in the works for months. We aimed to ground it in the real world, but not discard ideas as “never going to happen.” I hope we’ve accomplished that. Gift link in bio. An amazing team effort by our reporters, @jsurico and Nick Underwood, our visual team, @alice_cian @erinschaff Jenny Swanson @luciavazquezph @kenandavis, and my inimitable co-editor @marcellehopkins. With a lot of support and encouragement from @kludt and @monicadrake1.

Do you know why we started Jubilee? We read an article in @eater in 2013 about women being left out of food conferences around the world, something we knew was happening but didn’t have the data. Until @hillarydixlercanavan wrote this article. (Thank you to Hillary, former editor @kludt & the rest of the Eater team for inspiring us.) We realized how much women were missing out on by being (purposefully) excluded. Networking opportunities, business opportunities, new friendships, building their knowledge base, and the community that makes the world a little easier to bear. Over the years, we’ve brought thousands of women and other culinary creatives together for an amazing day of connection. This year’s Jubilee will be our biggest one yet, with more than 1,000 folks in attendance. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible since that very first Jubilee in 2014. One thing we know—there’s no going back!! See you April 12th at @theglasshouse.nyc! 🍒💣💥 Tickets are on sale now at cherrybombe.com. #jubileememories #bombesquad
