A Beacon of Light. 💙🇮🇱

Three years after October 7, 2023, the Jewish community came together at Central Park’s Reservoir to remember the victims, honor their lives, and stand united with Israel.

Organized by Yair Klyman, the Beacon of Light walk brought New Yorkers together beneath the Manhattan skyline, carrying blue lights and Israeli flags in a beautiful display of solidarity, remembrance, and Jewish pride.

Three years later, we continue to remember. We continue to stand together. And we continue to shine.

Tonight I had the honor of meeting @evyatar__david

On October 7th, Evyatar was at the Nova music festival with three friends. Two were gunned down by Hamas, while Evyatar was taken to Gaza and held hostage for 738 days. He was beaten. He was starved. He was forced to dig his own grave.

Tonight, Evyatar and his brother Ilay both spoke. It was profoundly moving to hear their two perspectives on the day Evyatar was taken hostage and the 738 days that followed—what he endured in captivity, and what his family experienced at home as they fought to bring him back.

Some details will stay with me forever. Evyatar told us he flossed his teeth with a thread he pulled from his shirt. Such a small, familiar act of caring for himself under unimaginable circumstances.

At a time when so much of the world has tried to minimize, deny, or erase Jewish pain and suffering, it is essential that Evyatar’s story is heard. These are real people and real families whose lives have been forever changed. Their suffering cannot be dismissed. Their experiences cannot be rewritten.

He should never have had this story to tell. But as he shares it, we have a responsibility to listen, to bear witness, and to make sure the world remembers.

Evyatar, you and your family deserve a lifetime of peace, healing, and happiness. It was an honor to stand beside you tonight. 💙

Free supermarkets aren’t the solution. Nothing is actually free.

When you replace local grocery stores with “free” models, small businesses shut down. Jobs disappear. Employees get laid off. And then those same people are pushed into the very systems we’re claiming to help.

That’s not compassion. That’s a cycle.

If we truly want dignity and stability, we should be investing in job placement, skills training, and real social service programs that support people on a path to work, ownership, and contribution ,not dependency.

Earlier this week, @Jews_of_NY and their allies gathered in Central Park - exactly 2 years after the black shabbat of October 7th, 2023. We gathered to remember the many souls we have lost, demand the immediate release of our hostages, and to stand together in unity as a community.

So many beautiful people from all walks of life came together: from ultra-orthodox to totally not, from Jews to non-Jews, from right to left, from all colors, ages, sexual orientations, and backgrounds. We are so blessed to have each other. We stood together in unity as a collective of people who see one another and see the truth - insisting on finding hope on such an immensely difficult day, praying that the then - promising hostage deal that will end the war comes to fruition.

This week’s parsha is V’Zot HaBracha. It’s the final portion of the Torah and symbolizes both closure and renewal - such meaningful concepts, especially this week. In the parsha, Moses blesses the people of Israel as they stand on the threshold of a new chapter, after escaping slavery and right before entering the promised land of Israel.

This week the nation once again stands at a crossroads between pain and hope, memory and future. This isn’t a foreign concept for Jews - they’ve been forced to thrive between pain and hope for centuries. The connection between Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut exemplifies this way of living. In the very last verse of this Torah portion, and before we start reading the Torah all over again, Moses tells the people of Israel: “אַשְׁרֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל, מִי כָמוֹךָ”

In English: Blessed/fortunate are you, Israel; who is like you.

This ending of the Torah is a powerful moment to remember: we are a unique people, we are so lucky to have each other, to see each other, to lift ourselves up, and to stand united. We stood together for the return of the hostages, for the safety of our people, and for never stopping to believe that even after unimaginable devastation, renewal is possible.
