Our fathers. Our grandfathers. The older generations who were taught to harden up, keep their problems to themselves and get on with it.

For many, mental health was never something you talked about.

You got on with the job. You swallowed your emotions. You carried the load. And if life got too heavy, you were expected to toughen up and keep moving.

But some of those old beliefs are still hurting people today.

Some still believe that struggling mentally is weakness. That men shouldn't cry. That asking for help means you can't handle life.

And when someone unlifes themselves, some still call it selfish. Some call it weak.

But what if, instead of judging someone's darkest moments, we tried to understand the pain they were carrying?

We might never fully understand what was happening inside someone's mind. But we can choose compassion over judgement.

We can choose to listen instead of lecture.
To ask questions instead of make assumptions.
To put an arm around someone instead of telling them to harden up.

Our fathers and grandfathers were often taught to survive in silence. Many did the best they could with what they knew.

But we can respect the generations before us without carrying every belief they passed down.

We can be the generation that teaches our sons it's okay to cry. That teaches our daughters it's okay to speak up. That shows our mates there's no shame in saying, "I'm not okay."

Because struggling isn't weakness. Asking for help isn't failure. And a person who dies by suicide deserves compassion, not condemnation.

Let's stop teaching people to hide their pain and start showing them they don't have to face it alone.

This isn't about blaming the older generation. It's about breaking a cycle that has kept too many people silent for too long.

Have the conversation with your dad. Your grandad. Your brother. Your mate. Your kids.

The world doesn't need more people telling others to toughen up.

It needs more people willing to sit beside someone and say:

"You don't have to pretend with me, mate. Let's have a yarn."
