Introducing a new artist registry page from artist Karine Swenson. Please read her Artist Statement and Bio below:

Artist Statement
My work explores our connection to the natural world, delving into the mysteries of all that we don’t fully understand. Technology has become such a dominant force in the modern world, and yet I believe our souls yearn for simpler times and the peace that is found when out in nature.

Artist Bio
Swenson was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Spending time in nature has always been a large part of her life. Living on the edges of towns and cities has continued throughout her adult life, influencing her work and playing a major part in her art practice.

Karine makes her own paint. She uses surprising tools when she paints, including a blow torch, a pancake griddle, and even pottery tools. Encaustic paint is made from beeswax and damar resin—a crystallized tree sap. The damar gives the wax strength and allows the surface to have a shiny finish. She adds powdered pigments to the wax and damar to achieve her spectacular colors.

The night before Karine Swenson was born, her mother was on top of the garage, painting the exterior of their house. Was it that in utero memory that lead to her life as an artist? It’s hard to say. One thing is certain, Swenson feels the most at peace when she is either in the studio, or outdoors enjoying the natural world.

“Encaustic painting, as all painting, is the exploration of the internal manifested as the external. It is a spiritual practice, a developed routine. It is an extension of our being.” - Ellen Koment

The night before Karine Swenson was born, her mother was on top of the garage, painting the exterior of their house. Maybe that is why she became an artist? One thing is certain, Swenson feels the most at peace when she is either in the studio with a brush (or pencil or charcoal) in her hand, or outdoors, enjoying the natural world.

Karine shares, “Living in a rural desert environment gives us an opportunity to see wild animals in their native habitat. We are witness to the hard realities of life and death, as well as peaceful and playful moments.

As a painter, one must go past what one sees and find something more. Capitalizing on our ability to anthropomorphize animals, I hope to convey the sense of wonder felt each time I encounter a wild creature. When painting the desert animals, I find in them their tenacity to survive not just their harsh desert environment, but the destructive force of humanity. Maybe if I can help people see wildlife in a new way, others will feel a connection with the creatures we share this planet with.”
