I’ll keep it short and sweet just like my black belt speech because it’s impossible to really put into words for me. But I’m so thankful for each and every person that’s been a part of this journey. I wouldn’t be here without you. Jiu Jitsu has been a blessing in my life. It’s helped me through tough times, and introduced some of the most incredible people into my life.

Here’s to the next chapter; continuing to grow, learn, teach & share the mats with wonderful people. 🌊🖤

This weekend was a special one for Flow State. We celebrated years of dedication and some incredible milestones on the mats. Getting to witness that journey come full circle is something special.

Flow state gained two black belts, Becca and Kinney.
A new brown belt, Skylar.
Two new purple belts, Steve and Logan.
A new yellow belt, Patrick

In jiu-jitsu, promotions often come after years of dedication, making each one especially meaningful. A purple belt reflects countless hours of learning and refinement, a brown belt recognizes an advanced stage of technical development, and a black belt represents a profound, sustained commitment to the art. Each of these promotions represents a thousand little decisions to keep going.

To Becca, Kinney, Skylar, Steve, Logan, and Patrick: congratulations. We’re proud of your hard work and grateful to be part of this with you.

And to everyone who has helped make this first year of Flow State possible, thank you for being part of the foundation we’re building, this is something to be extremely proud of!

The incredible:

Behind the last 6 weeks of highlights is a group of people that have made all the difference. Thankful for training partners, coaching, friendships and this community of good humans (and dogs) that are a part of my life. 🤍

It really is about who you share it with. And it’s more than these 3 folks, it’s everyone that’s been a part of building Flow State into the co-op it is becoming. But these folks are pretty special to me. Giving so much time and energy, on and off the mats. It doesn’t go unnoticed. Truly thankful for these kinds of friendships.

One week ago our own Coach Becca secured double gold winning her weight division and the open at the @ibjjf Master Worlds in Las Vegas at brown belt. We’re so proud of all our athletes that went down to compete and test their skills and support each other.

This last year was one of discomfort, uncertainty, and experiencing a lot of emotions I hadn’t felt about a sport I’m so passionate about. But that led to garage gym sessions, and then one of the best things that’s ever happened - a community of people coming together to build @flowstatejiujitsujuneau. My heart is so full to be a part of what Flow State is, and will become. A welcoming environment, quality training, genuine people. 🤍🌊

Meet our Jiu Jitsu instructors

Becca Charbonneau-

Becca is a brown belt, and avid competitor. She was a 2025 IBJJF No-Gi Pans Medalist and holds the Alaska Women’s BMF title, the 145 lb belt at Submissions by Shore and the 160 lb belt at the NW Submission Challenge.

As an instructor Becca likes to lead an active class where students can put the techniques they’ve learned to the test. She encourages folks of all body sizes and abilities to come give jiu jitsu a try and see the mental and physical impact it can have.

When she’s not on the mats you can find Becca working with clients as a Registered Dietitian, hiking mountains, and spending time with her husband and their dog.

Kinney Blas-
Kinney is a brown belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, experience in MMA, coaching MMA and doing jiujitsu for over 10 years.

Skylar Young Bayer-
Skylar is a purple belt and trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Massachusetts, Maine, D.C., and Iceland before moving to Juneau in 2022. She loves encouraging new people to try jiu jitsu, especially in the women’s class. Her favorite jiu jitsu camp is Gathering of the Unicorns, held in Portland, Oregon every year.

Destiny Kennell-
Destiny is a blue belt who started training in middle school under Nathan Zigler at Relson Gracie Arizona . It quickly became much more than a sport. It helped her build confidence, resilience, and the ability to protect herself as a young woman.
As one of the Women’s Class Instructors at Flow State, she’s passionate about helping other women develop those same skills and discover what they’re capable of.

When shes not on the mats, she enjoys hunting, fly fishing, and spending time with her husband and dogs.
“I love being outdoors and embracing the challenges and adventures that come with it.” -Destiny

It is with great sadness that we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Nonito Blas, a true public servant and one of Guam’s most respected village leaders.

Mayor Blas first took office in 1987 as Commissioner of Mangilao and went on to win every single election thereafter, a true testament to the trust and love the people had for him. He faithfully served the village until stepping down 10 years ago at the age of 80, making him the longest-serving mayor in Guam’s history.

He is credited for helping shape the growth and spirit of Mangilao, including creating beloved traditions such as the Mangilao Night Market and the Mangilao Donne Festival, events that brought together families, local businesses, culture, and community pride.

And if you knew Mayor Blas, you knew he believed actions spoke louder than words. One of the most legendary stories about him was during a mayoral campaign when an opposing candidate was holding a roadside wave and rally. Mayor Blas famously pulled up in his personal work truck right next to them, unloaded his brush cutter, and started cutting the grass instead. While others were waving signs, he was focused on beautifying and improving the village. That was Mayor Blas in a nutshell -less talk, more work.

Thank you, Mayor Blas, for your decades of leadership, sacrifice, humor, and love for the people of Mangilao. Your legacy will forever live on in the village you helped build and the generations you inspired.

And knowing Mayor Blas, we know he would not want us to end this message too sadly. So we’ll leave everyone with this: Mangilao may have lost its longtime mayor, but heaven just gained the man with the biggest chili in Mangilao… chili pepper, that is. 🌶️❤️

Rest easy, Mayor. Si Yu’os Ma’åse’.
