Type It Up EP by @mattberninger - September 18, 2026

This batch marks the end of the Get Sunk era with bittersweet nostalgia. Thanks to Matt for bringing this crew together and encouraging us to keep the creative wheels spinning.

The past 2 years of recording & touring has been magical. These performances capture the energy that Matt B & band (myself, Garret Lang, Julia Laws, Sterling Laws) developed on the road together in ‘25-‘26. Playing live shows together strengthens the studio musician connective tissues. As a British friend says during long goodbyes: “It’s been emotional.” Thank you band!

*Type It Up - The instrumental originated from a groovy Garret Lang demo. We road-tested it and continued to tweak new arrangements. I love playing the chromatic harmony, and though I’ve previously avoided a mute-string’d guitar, Garret’s rhythm idea was so good that I had to replicate it on the record. Matt wrote many good drafts of words, but I most prefer the version he settled on.

*Ask For Water - We initially recorded this song a little too slowly, but had a rawness and tone that we wanted to keep. I tried using software to speed it up but there were ugly sonic artifacts. I dumped the digital files onto a tape machine, and that colored the sound just enough to stop hearing the digi-distraction that I feared I’d never be able to un-hear. After spending so much time on Sterling’s drums, they ended up with priority bias and quite loud in the mix, probably the way they should be. Julia and Matt’s vocals harmonies in the chorus brought out the magic, per uzh.

*Blue Monday - We were asked to cover New Order, a worthy challenge, and we knocked it out in a few days. We played this on the road a ton and it was always a raucous sweat bath.

*Who Loves The Sun - I didn’t work on this cover, but I can’t get over Matt collaborating with perennial heroes @rosannecash @johnleventhal

“Martini Me Fatso” by @mattberninger - July 17, 2026

Thanks as always to Matt for the opportunity to co-write, produce, mix & play, and to our stellar team for giving this song its wings (& talons).

I’ll always leave lyrics open to interpretation, but the image of Matt singing “I Can’t Die” on a festival stage in the grueling summer heat sums up for me what it feels like both to perform as a musician and to receive as an audience member under the most ideal conditions of a rock show. Music should make us feel immortal, if only for 4 minutes 27 seconds.

It’s been a relentless joy touring and recording with Matt, Garret, Julia & Sterling over the past year, and I’ve felt that the groove we’ve found as a unit reveals itself on “MMF.”

A few production notes:
· I was trying writing in open D6 tuning on my SG Jr. (like regular open D with the 2nd string tuned to B) and this riff happened.
· In a small personal win, I finally figured out how to get a D.I. guitar tone that I actually liked on this recording (stacked tube pres cranked into one another and filtered)
· A good percussion overdub always goes a long way.
· The very last decision while making this song was to fade-out the vocals, and it stuck.

The first single from Moonshades, “Old Devil Moon” is out today 🌙

Since I moved to LA from NYC, Garret and Jay have been my musical sanctuary. We’ve been lucky to hold down a regular Sunday night gig @justineswinebar - shoutout to Justine and @apophaticmelismatic - where we’ve developed a deep trust buoyed by a contained chaos that reaches beyond. Garret and Jay swing and sway like dancers and roll out the carpet for me to twist and whirl melodies. I am eternally grateful for our trio and our sound.

Speaking of sound - nobody sets and captures a vibe like @adrianolsen.mp3. I met Adrian on @jacksonport_‘s Dusted Beauty album session and I was instantly comforted and enlivened by his ideas and process in the studio. His work co-producing, recording, and mixing Moonshades is extraordinary and I’m especially stunned with how seamlessly he bottled our molten trio magic.

At its foundation, Moonshades is a trio record, inspired by legendary saxophone triumvirates helmed by my heroes Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, @branfordmarsalis, @joshuaredmanmusic, and too many more to list. I discovered four trio records in particular during high school and listened to them and played along with them obsessively while procrastinating with my pre-calculus homework. These records and the musicians who made them taught me values of personal expression, musical dialogue, freedom, vulnerability, and elegance. I attempted to share some visions of these ideals in the sounds of Moonshades.

I hope our rendition of Old Devil Moon takes you on a magic carpet ride, full of butterflies inside, and blinds you with love deep in your eyes, on this valentine’s eve ♥️

Very excited to announce the release of @jamesemmanuelofficial’s latest single “Nothing But Love” on @deccarecords - the 2nd & latest single from his upcoming EP. I had the pleasure of engineering, producing and mixing it at @taurusrisingrecords in the heart of the Mojave desert. I also added some BG’s, guitar, glockenspiel & string arrangement on top of my duties behind the desk. I want to give a huge thank you and shout out to the band on this one - @gray_wave on drums, @dustinbookatz on bass, @doug_organ on keys, @mattsaunders_music on guitar, @pearlcharles on BG’s, @freddydeboe on sax, Jason Colby on trumpet, a wonderful string quartet made up of Andrew Bullbrook, Xenia Deviatkina-Loh, Rita Andrade, Christine Kim.
