Excerpts from the new MARVIN magazine. I met the Creative Director for the band Bring Me The Horizon last year when I was in Sheffield doing a Disorder book talk so it was great to have them in the mag and work on a feature for them. And wonderful to be working with some legendary photographers on this issue including Phil from my Ray Gun days and Steve who’s photography used to light up the pages of N.M.E. and was my go-to source for music growing up. If I need to describe Aaliyah in one sentence, I think the best would be: “She always was true to herself”, in fact, she said exactly that same words: “I stay true to myself”, she was referring to her style but she also said: “I am always pushing myself to be aware of that and be original”, that’s because the sense of this post, celebrating One In A Milion 30 years, and celebrating how she always be loyal to herself and a hint of that is this armour ring, who I recently discovered it’s from Vivienne Westwood. She wore this ring all her OIAM era along with her sunglasses, who was changing them but they usually wore the same few ones in many shoots, and I always loved to see her personality through every photoshoot she did. The Vivienne Westwood “Knuckle Armour” ring, was crafted from sterling silver (925), it features a bold, armor-like design reminiscent of a knuckle guard, giving it a strong and edgy look. Here you’ve got three different versions of it. The first I think was its first version and is from the end of the 80s, the second one I’m still not sure but I think it’s almost exactly the one Aaliyah wore, it’s hard to tell because they crafted them by hand and every logo of the ring was a little bit different, but I know this is from the 90s, so I guess it’s the same, and the third one is from the early 00s. You still can find this ring nowadays, I personally don’t like the new version, but it’s great they keep Westwood legacy alive still selling these iconic pieces of her collection, so the new generations can know her work, even it’s not the same because I think they lost all Vivienne personality but it’s good .
