Hannah Ban 2026–27 Knowlton Ambassador Meet Hannah! Hannah is majoring in Architecture, and she answered a few questions about her time as at Knowlton. --- —› What do you enjoy most about being a Knowlton Student? Knowlton is the perfect balance between hands-on, creative design studios and thought-provoking theoretical lectures. The curriculum doesn't confine you to a single track; instead, it encourages you to explore architecture from multiple dimensions and truly discover your own voice. To a prospective student, I’d say ‘Why Knowlton?’: because this is where you learn not just how to build, but how to think critically about the impact of your designs. —› What do you wish you had been told as a high school student considering your major? What advice would you give? I wish someone had told me that architecture demands intense dedication and hard work from day one. However, if you are someone who finds joy in taking a conceptual theory and turning it into a beautiful, tangible reality, it is incredibly rewarding. My advice? Don't just look at the long hours; look at what you get to create. If you love blending logic with aesthetics, there is no better place to be than architecture. Waiting on Precarious Grounds: Scattered Timescales across Bayelsa Faith Folarin ARCH 8420 — Master of Architecture Degree Project / Spring 2026 Instructor: Mohamad Nahleh, Ghida Anouti Waiting on Precarious Grounds: Scattered Timescales Across Bayelsa examines the environmental, social, and spatial consequences of oil extraction in Nigeria’s Niger Delta. Centered on Bayelsa State, the project redefines waiting not as passive delay, but as an active condition of adaptation, repair, preservation, and survival within landscapes shaped by decades of environmental degradation and political neglect. Through layered cartographic research, architectural interventions, and material investigations using locally rooted materials such as iroko wood, laterite, and raffia palm, the thesis reveals how communities continue to inhabit, reclaim, and transform the precarious environments. Rather than proposing a singular solution, the project presents architecture as an evolving framework that supports everyday life while acknowledging the overlapping ecological, economic, and cultural timescales that define the Niger Delta. --- Waiting on Precarious Grounds was awarded the 2026 William Riat ’73 Prize by the Architecture Section. The William Riat ’73 Prize is awarded each year to recognize outstanding work in the Master Project by students in the Master of Architecture program. --- See more at the link in our bio @knowltonarchitecture @ghidaanouti @mohamadn8

Closes Friday! The Thunder is Loud and Rolling in the Banvard Gallery until OCT 9 The Thunder is Loud and Rolling brings together practitioners confronting the fraught conditions shaping southern Lebanon today, where earth and sky emerge as sites of struggle and fields of possibility. While older negotiations with the environment persist, agricultural life must now calibrate between a high-tech occupation overhead and an enduring fidelity to land and harvest below, giving rise to spatial and cultural practices that unsettle any easy division between war and peace. In their drawings, EcoRove and Mohamad Nahleh render this entanglement legible, tracing how militarization is at once eclipsed and reimagined through an insistence on a shared, postcolonial future. Through sound installation and ceramic bells, Ghida Anouti and Jess Myers tune the space to the enduring temporalities of land and the strained listening that occurs in the fragile timing of safety and seasonal order. The Banvard Gallery is located on the first floor of Knowlton Hall and is open Monday–Friday from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Read more at the link in our bio. --- @ghidaanouti @mohamadn8 @dragons_podcast @eco__rove @knowltonarchitecture

THIS WEDNESDAY! The Baumer Lecture Series continues this Wednesday, October 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the Gui Auditorium with Greg Castillo. --- Contemporary society faces a critical decision point in the “deteriorating state of our social imagination,” according to collective intelligence theorist Geoff Mulligan. As billionaires consolidate their power over media, they propagate imagined corporate techno-futures and dismiss grassroots visions of alternative tomorrows. “Outlaw Worldbuilders” dispenses with nostalgic readings of Bay Area counterculture to reassess its production of alternative social realities through physical construction and adaptive reuse of built infrastructures. Based on essays in Design Radicals: Building Counterculture in the Bay Area, the talk examines the work of three communities of Californian “outlaw builders”—Native Americans, anti-patriarchal feminists, and Berkeley architecture students—as potential templates for our own challenge to reimagine the world anew. Greg Castillo is a professor in the Department of Architecture in the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and an Honorary Associate Professor of Architectural History and Theory at the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning.
