November is Diabetes Awareness Month. I’m sharing this to bring awareness about Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and why a cure is so important to me and the many millions that struggle with T1D.
💙 Here is my story: When I was 18, a sophomore in college, I became a T1D a few weeks after a bout with the flu. As a result of the flu, my immune system attacked my pancreas so that is was incapable of producing insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar levels and is necessary to live. Since that day in 1986, life has never been the same. For the first 14 years I relied on insulin shots, about 25,000 of them, and at least 60,000 finger pricks to test my blood 🩸 sugar. Thanks to amazing medical research, in 2000, I went on an insulin pump which is akin to a small IV that I wear 24/7. This has to be refilled and reinserted every 3 days. I now also wear a CGM, more incredible technology, that can sense my blood sugar and communicates with my pump. This has to be injected every 7 days in my arm, leg or belly. Both of these are huge advances in T1D research, but sadly it’s not enough and nowhere near a cure!
T1D is silent and deadly. Managing it is a daily struggle. Everything from a cough, lack of sleep, stress, unplanned exercise (think walking up and down the aisles at Costco), not finishing a meal, picking fries off my husband’s plate, etc…all of that has a profound effect on my sugar. What does low blood sugar feel like for me…rash judgment (middle of the night Insta purchases), profuse sweats, major shaking, anger and confusion. How does high sugar feel for me…body aches, chest pain, immense sadness and exhaustion. So even if I eat the same thing every day, for every meal & do the same activities, my sugars will still fluctuate due to external factors. There is no bubble to live in! If a day goes by with no highs or lows, I feel like a unicorn.🦄 It does happen, just not often enough. I hope my story gave you some insight/awareness about T1D. Many confuse it with Type 2, which is controlled with medicine & lifestyle changes.
