I’m not big on elaborate backdrops or settings for school pics. Partially b/c I have a small house and storing all that stuff takes space! It’s tempting as there’s some adorable ideas out there.

Also because I often find even just pulling out a sun shade/screen can be off putting for anxious kids. You’re this new person they’ve never met asking them to sit in front of or next to or under this weird thing and then you’re not supposed to let your concerned/serious/not-so-sure-about-this face show. Especially when working with 2-3yr olds at nursery school level. By the 4 year old and pre-k age they know what’s up and most know how to flash a gorgeous grin.

So I like to keep things simple. I’ll bring a little chair and maybe a potted plant or a pumpkin in fall. I’ll use what’s around - tree stumps, benches, cherry blossoms from the tree in the school yard. Last year the blossoms had fallen so I brought mini sunflowers (read: flowers without prickers that are hardy enough to be manhandled by toddlers for a day). I let the kids choose if they wanted to hold one or two or none.

Today we used a bench and I put some books on it and had some cherry blossoms. Some kids wanted to hold the flowers. Others didn’t know what to do so asking them to put their hands on the books is an easy way to get littles to “pose.” Sometimes our goal isn’t big perfect smiles but a little sweetness looking in the general direction of the camera. Thats all. And for small schools I can take the time needed with each kid to let them warm up. Amazing teachers help too💚

Kensington Nursery School is having an online open house this morning!! This our second year at KNS and my son loves it! They have an amazing outdoor area and super caring teachers. They’re also very COVID cautious and I feel safe sending my little guy there. Feel free to ask me any questions.
