Thirty-eight experienced kayakers. Six weeks. Two lifting sessions per week. A 15 m kayak sprint. Those details set the boundaries of this study. I like the idea that different sprint phases may respond differently to training. I would test that idea in the sport and athletes I actually coach. What result would tell you that your programming decision worked?

The Huffines Institute thanks Dr. Roger Kollock for delivering the 2026 Hilliard Lecture in Human Performance. During his visit to TAMU, Dr. Kollock met with students and faculty to share his research, career path, and advice for the next generation of human performance scientists. He is on the faculty at the University of Tulsa, where he directs the Biomechanics Research Laboratory in the Oxley College of Health Sciences. His research examines the neuromuscular and biomechanical factors that influence injury risk among traditional athletes and nontraditional athletic populations, including firefighters and military personnel. Special thanks to Huffines Faculty Affiliate Dr. Jenna Yentes for serving as his faculty host.

NEW PAPER ACCEPTED IN JSCR!

This one has been bouncing around in my head for a while.

We talk a lot about Change of Direction Deficit (CODD) as a way of separating an athlete’s ability to change direction from their linear sprint speed.

But I kept coming back to a question:

Are we expressing the deficit in the best way?

In this study, we used NFL Combine data—athletes competing at the highest level of the talent-identification process in American football—to look at an alternative:

Percentage-Based Change of Direction Deficit.

Rather than only asking how many seconds an athlete loses when changing direction compared with sprinting, we express that loss relative to the athlete’s linear speed.

Why might that matter?

Because a 0.30-second deficit may not mean the same thing for an athlete who runs 4.4 as it does for one who runs 5.1.

The goal was to determine whether this percentage-based approach better isolates change-of-direction ability itself, rather than simply rewarding or penalizing athletes because of how fast they are in a straight line.

Our findings suggest that it may.

Hence the title:

“Percentage-Based Change of Direction Deficit More Directly Measures Change of Direction Ability at the NFL Combine than Absolute Measures.”

I love projects like this because they challenge something we’ve gotten comfortable calculating and ask a simple question:

Can we measure it better?

Accepted for publication in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

More to come once it’s available.

An awesome upcoming seminar opportunity to learn what Dr. Thomas Ferris, a faculty member in TAMU's Industrial & Systems Engineering Department, and his Human Factors and Cognitive Systems Lab are currently working on. His research investigates how people think and work in complex human-machine systems, with an emphasis on attention and interruption management, decision-making under time pressure, human error, and human-automation interaction. His work has been applied in anesthesiology, aviation, military command and control, unmanned vehicle operations, ground transportation, and construction.

Before using a velocity number to make a decision, I want four labels attached to it:

1. Exercise: What movement did they perform?
2. Load: How was it prescribed?
3. Object: Was the bar or the athlete-plus-load system measured?
4. Metric: Mean velocity or peak velocity?

Our study makes the third point hard to ignore. The bar was faster than the system in every exercise and load combination we tested.

“Fast” by itself isn’t enough information to coach from. Save this checklist for the next time a velocity chart lands on your desk.

The world is a classroom, and our College offers opportunities for students to learn far beyond campus.

At the 2026 Education Abroad World Fair, Dr. Mark LaSota of @knsmtamu and Jonathan Masabni engaged with Aggie students and promoted our upcoming trips to South Korea, Japan, Germany and Belize.

These opportunities help students expand their perspectives while preparing for success beyond the classroom.
