At Frieze Masters 2026, Lagos-based gallery kó presents a solo exhibition of works by pioneering Nigerian modernist Adebisi Fabunmi (1945–2023) in the Spotlight section, curated by Devika Singh and Sofia Gotti. Located at Booth S18, the presentation brings together rare paintings and works on paper from the 1960s and 1970s, tracing Fabunmi’s formative years as a leading figure of the Osogbo Art School. Emerging during Nigeria’s post-independence cultural transformation, Fabunmi developed a distinctive visual language characterised by rhythmic lines, bold geometric forms, flattened perspectives and intricate patterns that weave Yoruba mythology, folklore and cosmology into scenes of everyday life. Through this presentation, kó contributes to the ongoing reassessment of African modernism, highlighting the artistic innovations of the Osogbo movement and its significance within broader histories of twentieth-century art.

Frieze Masters is back, and Lee Sharrock has picked five presentations worth making time for.

The selection moves from the overlooked women who helped shape Abstract Expressionism and Alice Neel’s radical portraiture to Mohamed Melehi’s Moroccan modernism, Adebisi Fabunmi and the Osogbo Art School, and a group presentation bringing together Caro, Christo, Hockney, Warhol and more.

A useful starting point if you’re heading to Frieze Masters this week.

A TOUCH AWAY

Two figures. Two lights.
A quiet tension between illumination and escape.

In this contemporary figurative painting, light becomes more than a source of visibility. It becomes a metaphor for endurance—the possibility that, at certain moments, the distance between holding on and switching off can feel almost imperceptible.

Yet this work also marks a shift in my practice: an exploration of new forms, spatial relationships and a more distilled visual language.

A Touch Away is both a meditation on the human experience and a signpost toward where my work is going next.

Title: To Be YOUNG, GIFTED and BLACK
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 80 × 105cm
Year:2026

The inspiration behind this artwork comes from my admiration for Nina Simone and the powerful message of Black identity, creativity, and self-worth. Through this painting, I wanted to celebrate the beauty and strength of Blackness while honoring the voice and legacy of an artist who used her music to express deep emotions and social realities.

I used a combination of bold colors, fragmented geometric shapes, and black skin to explore the relationship between identity and individuality. The different shapes and colors represent the many experiences, emotions, and stories that make up a person. Although the portrait is divided into different forms, they come together to create one complete identity.

The black skin is an intentional celebration of Blackness. It represents confidence, presence, dignity, and the beauty of embracing who we are without apology. The colorful patterns reflect the richness, diversity, and complexity of Black experiences.

The title, To Be Young, Gifted and Black, is inspired by Nina Simone’s iconic song and its message of recognizing the value and potential within Black people.

As an artist, I believe every artwork carries a story. This painting is my way of celebrating Black identity, honoring Nina Simone’s legacy, and reminding young people that their gifts, creativity, and identity are worthy of recognition.
