While touring for Weezer’s debut album Rivers Cuomo had a chance to walk around the campus at Harvard. He was inspired to apply and enroll as a way to take a break from the machinery of the music industry and the intensity of superstardom. He had started to write songs for Weezer’s sophomore album and it was going to be a space opera. During this time he had surgery to lengthen one of his legs as he was born with one longer than the other. The recovery process was extremely painful. At the same time he was also yearning to find a girlfriend and establish a relationship based on genuine connection. He felt a tremendous emptiness from most of his social interactions as a rock star. All of these things left him feeling isolated and depressed. One of the pieces of music he was listening to while he was at Harvard was Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. Eventually he abandoned the space opera and opted to write a more autobiographical collection of songs that were emotionally naked, with references to Puccini’s work throughout. The most prominent examples are the album’s title and cover. When compared to the debut album Pinkerton has a more live, direct, raw sound. It was not received well upon release because it was deemed to be a step too far away from their first album’s bright and upbeat sound. While I still love that first album, right now I think I dig Pinkerton more. Going to play it louder than fuck. This post goes out to two of my dearest homies: @caquita_brown & @rdlndsvaya because I got to hang with them last night and we talked for hours, reminiscing about our wild youth. They’re two of my favorite people in this crazy and I think I have spent more time listening to Weezer with them pretty than much anyone else. Stay groovy! Enjoy yourselves. It’s later than you think! #weezer #pinkerton #1996 #madamebutterfly #digginginfinity

I have just finished John Szwed’s incredible biography of Harry Smith. Some may have heard his name in association with the Anthology of American Folk Muisc, which was compiled from his collection of 78s. He curated an astounding collection of recordings that were made in the early years of the 20th Century but were signposts of our collective connection to something elemental and ancient. Smith was a true American original, an eccentric polymath, and his seminal influence was widespread in the burgeoning bohemian subcultures that emerged the post-World War II years. He was an anthropologist, filmmaker, painter, musicologist, folklorist, collector, and a lifelong student of esoterica and the occult. As Szwed writes, “He closely observed then ignored the line between the low and high arts, the folk and the fine, the commonplace and the esoteric, and by consistently moving across these artistic registers in his work he was able to see not just the cultural but aesthetic value of otherwise ignored arts, suspecting or knowing, all the while that everything is connected.” I can only hope that anyone reading this has their curiosity piqued, and perhaps begins their own journey with Harry. I recommend starting with the Anthology of American Folk Music. If you need any further persuasion, check out the latest episode of @americanroutes which focuses on the Anthology’s continuing impact. After that, check out @harry_smith_archives where there is so much to explore and learn from, if you’ve a mind to it. #harrysmith #cosmicscholarlifeandtimesofharrysmith #johnszwed #anthologyofamericanfolkmusic #harrysmitharchives
