KARKLOOF100 - Done and dust(ed)

My goodness, what 30 hours can through at you:
• thick mist (making navigation tricky)
• heat
• wind
• the worst 20km of my life...😉
• sleep deprived
• and so much more...

Maar, soos hulle sê, aanhouer wen!!

Hierdie race is definitief nie vir die "faint hearted" nie. Dit was bloody tough, man!!

Lekker om hom te kan "tick off" van my "To Run List". Nou is dit weer bietjie familie tyd.

Thanks @frikkie_pienaar_ en @kobusmaree vir hierdie "jag naweek". Julle is YSTERS!! Dit was lekker om saam met julle te kon hol.

MacMac 100 Miler Lumberjack Edition
@macmacultra

The MacMac ticked all the boxes as my first 100 Miler for the obvious reasons... forests, mountains, single tracks, perfect bad weather, and of course beer on tap...

BUT what I didn't expect was the fantastic crew, aid stations that were out of this world, and race directors from all over the country, creating an incredible non-stop vibe from start to finish.

I had one goal besides finishing, that was to start the race being the last person over the start line in honour of my friend and mentor Leon Engelbrecht and then to find my own pace and place in the race.

An ultra wouldn't be complete without making new friends, and I was lucky to find Kobus Maree and Werner Oosthuizen, who are both experienced ultra runners and taught and guided me through to the finish.

As by design, Matt joined the party at 110 kilometers, while busy with his first 50 miler, and I felt like our AR team was complete.

Running alongside giants in the ultra trail running world like Nicky Booyens and Marius van Rensburg and then chilling with them and the MacMac team at the finish was a highlight.

Thank you, Maretha, Eloff, and Frikkie. Your team are amazingballs.

This all wouldn't be possible without my Irish drill sargent soul mate and my two precious angels, who miss me and are always proud of me. Thank you, my girls.

TIME to give back!!

Being part of the crew at Ultra Trail Drakensberg is just "lekke"!!

Going up Sani Pass to waive a fello Nelspruiter off on his maiden UTD160 journey, makes it so much more special. Go @kobusmaree !!

En dan om 'n Maluti Lager saam met @frikkie_pienaar_ en @eloffhoffman, te drink by "the Highest Pub in Africa"...priceless!!

And just like that we are ON AMUK!

For some of us, ADDO is done and dusted, and we move our focus to @ultratraildrakensberg , South Africa's highest ultra and the next massive hurdle in South Africa's toughest trail series, AMUK.

After a hot and fast start, the evening quickly cooled down when thunderstorms came rolling in, lightning bolts flashing down to the rhythm of a war drum.

During the first evening, all the water forced massive earth worms out of the ground. Reminiscing to the @macmacultra 200miler last year, I thought it is just another one of my weird and wonderful trail hallucinations, only to realise these Jurassic Park like creatures were real when I took a photo and they actually showed up on my screen.

The "monsters" weren't just out on the trails. Each of us had to dig deep and had to fight the monsters in our heads. A 55% DNF rate, the 2nd highest rate at ADDO, substantiated this.

Sharing most of the race with @i_am_no_other and @kobusmaree, we crossed the finish line together, grateful to get the waterlogged shoes off and the trench feet up.

@africas_wildest_ultra smiling faces at aid stations never disappoints, and of course our awesome race directors Sian and Sheena - You guys rocked!

Coach Fred @mindfulrunner, we got another miler down, honoured to share 7th position with these 2 rockstars 🤠
