For early-career theatre makers it can feel impossible to get a foot in the door. The pathways to roles in theatre are often unclear for young people with cost & increasing financial pressures remaining barriers to accessing training & opportunities in the arts for too many. That’s why I was delighted to be at the Stage the Future gala performance of @chichesterft’s My Fair Lady, supporting their campaign to raise money for so they can continue to nurture the theatre makers of the future.

MY FAIR LADY (CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’d never seen My Fair Lady, not even the Julie Andrews film, but Chichester always does such a fantastic job with its Golden Age summer musicals that I couldn’t resist a trip south to catch it.

Having watched Brigadoon, Lerner and Loewe’s other major hit, at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre last year, expectations for the score were lusciously high. But My Fair Lady is of course a musical with so many numbers that transcend the show itself.

Keziah Ibe, who I saw as Amelie at ArtsEd last year, was captivating here as Eliza. I much preferred the character before Higgins (Hadley Fraser) stripped away her charm and personality to mould her into an upper class drone and Ibe takes advantage of this, making the audience care about Eliza from her first entrance on stage.

Vocally, she was impressive (as those of us who saw her in Amelie will have already known) and it certainly did not feel as if she was stepping into her first professional role. Ibe filled the vast thrust stage with her soaring voice and warm personality, with ‘Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?’, ‘Just You Wait’ and ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ real standouts.

Eliza’s chemistry with Higgins was evident from the off and Fraser did a sterling job with what is, in 2026, an outdated and peculiar type of character. He was ghastly and vile but without ever seeming to cross the line into irredeemable.

Fraser is an old pro when it comes to this sort of role now and shone in solos including ‘Why Can’t The English?’ and ‘I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face’. He worked well opposite Tony Jayawardena (Colonel Pickering) and made Higgins somewhat palatable despite the book saying otherwise.

Belinda Lang was a force as Mrs Higgins, while Ben Culleton more than made the most of ‘On The Street Where You Live’ at the close of Act I. The ensemble, led by Gary Milner (Alfred Doolittle), did a great job with Stephen Mear’s choreography during ‘Get Me To The Church On Time’.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say My Fair Lady is one of my favourite musicals - the book is not all that enjoyable, with its relentless misogyny and classism - but this is a classy vision of it.
