നേരമിരുട്ടിയാൽ വന്യമൃഗങ്ങൾ കയ്യേറുന്ന കോത്തഗിരിയിലെ മലയാളി റിസോർട്ട്...

Welcome to one of the most remote and untouched forest stays near Kotagiri!

In this video, I take you on an adventurous journey to Kokode Resort, located around 30 km from Kotagiri, deep inside the forests and plantations of the Nilgiris.

The drive itself is an experience, with steep hairpin bends, narrow roads, tea estates, dense forests, and plantation landscapes that make you feel like you’re traveling to the end of the world.

This is not a luxury getaway. If you’re looking for fancy amenities and resort-style comforts, this place may not be for you. However, if you love nature, wildlife, birdwatching, and complete isolation from the outside world, this forest stay is a true paradise.

The Shadow of the Western Ghats: The Legge’s Hawk-Eagle

Spotted this magnificent Legge’s Hawk-Eagle (Nisaetus kelaarti) surveying its territory from a perfect skeletal perch. Often mistaken for its cousin, the Crested Hawk-Eagle (Changeable Hawk-Eagle), this powerful raptor is a true specialist of the mountain woodlands and evergreen forests of South India and Sri Lanka.
How to tell them apart in the field? 🧐
Identifying these raptors can be tricky, but look for these key field marks:
• Underpart Patterns: Legge’s has prominent horizontal white belly bands and heavy streaking. The Crested Hawk-Eagle typically has vertical streaks on a paler breast.
• The Crest: While both have crests, the Legge’s Hawk-Eagle usually sports a prominent, darker crest that is often more upright than the variable crest of the Changeable Hawk-Eagle.
• Underwing Coverts: If you catch them in flight, Legge’s features unstreaked buff underwing coverts, whereas the Crested Hawk-Eagle shows more varied patterns.
• Size & Talons: Legge’s is slightly larger and more robust, equipped with massive talons—proportionately larger than those of the Crested Hawk-Eagle—specialized for hunting large prey like the Malabar Giant Squirrel.
Witnessing this apex predator in the wild is a reminder of the raw beauty of our high-altitude ecosystems. Have you ever confused these two in the field? Let me know in the comments! 👇
